A brief history of the Paris Saint-Germain shirt

Initial kit

The colors of Paris Saint-Germain are white, blue and red and have been since the conception of the club. They symbolize the French flag and also have a connotation specific to the City of Paris. The white refers to the glorious past of the club in Saint-Germain-en-Laye while the blue, red and the colors of the city represent the whole territory. All three colors are represented in the team’s home kit, with all-dark blue uniforms, red embellishments and white writing.

Le Coq Sportif, a famous French sportswear manufacturer best known for creating the legendary green St-Étienne jerseys of the same era, created PSG’s first all-red kit. Paris Saint-Germain’s first logo had a blue soccer ball with one of the hexagonal panels replaced by a red ship.

Current colors

In 1972, a new design with a red depiction of the Eiffel Tower on a blue background was adopted in place of the club’s previous logo that year. Daniel Hechter, a fashion designer who later became the club’s president, came up with the overall concept of the PSG shirt as we know it. He then credited Ajax, Europe’s finest and most successful team in the early 1970s, as the inspiration for his shirt. He simply replaced the Dutch club’s white with blue while keeping the wide central red stripe.

1986 – PSG partners with Adidas

1989 – Nike partners with PSG

Nike and PSG have had a partnership for over 30 years. The initial kit designed by Nike, which dates back to the 1989/90 season, was a white jersey with a fold-down button-down collar. The length of the shirt was adorned with a striking red and blue vertical stripe. The shirt has a jacquard design emerging from the fabric and features the Nike Futura logo.

In 1992, the club introduced a completely new logo on its jersey designed by artistic director Étienne Robial. The logo features three rectangles – two blue and one red – each bearing the letters P, S and G. A black banner bearing the words “Paris Saint-Germain” in white sans serif is displayed below.

1995 – Opel becomes main sponsor

In 1995, the German car manufacturer Opel became the main sponsor of Paris Saint-Germain, marking the end of the trend of sporting 2 or more sponsors on the PSG shirt. The Opel logo became a staple of PSG jerseys for much of the next decade.

The club restored the original logo with minor changes. In 1996, new text (Paris Saint-Germain in bold sans serif) which occupies the upper half of the emblem’s perimeter and the club’s founding year (1970) at the bottom were added. Much more polished than the previous version.

In 1999, PSG presented a completely redesigned shirt. German automaker OPEL, who have supported the French club for seven seasons, are still front and center, but this time the colors are totally different: the shirt sports a silver color scheme with a horizontal white stripe and a navy blue finish, including the collar. 2006 – Fly Emirates takes over as main sponsor

The fan-favorite “sponsorless” look on the clean design, which included a thinner Hechter stripe, was introduced for the 2006–07 season, with the start of the Fly Emirates partnership and a new wave of PSG.

The accompanying jersey takes us back to the original PSG colours. A fresh twist on the traditional kit, the blue jersey with red and white stripes down the middle, represents the turning point in PSG’s rise to the top of the French league.
