Château de Maintenon in France: the castle of the secret wife of Louis XIV

This French Renaissance-style castle would probably have remained largely unknown had it not become the home of Louis XIV’s Secret Wife, Madame de Maintenon. Françoise d’Aubigné – her real name – was a woman of modest origins often compared to Cinderella. After Louis married her in secret, the Château de Maintenon underwent many transformations as she put her own stamp on it. As for the French garden, it was designed by the famous landscape architect André Le Nôtre but was only developed in 2013.
