‘Music-Map’: The Site that Builds Family Trees for Rock Stars

Music-Map bills itself as “The Tourist Map of Music,” giving users (or tourists) the DNA strands – or the Family tree, if you prefer – of any artist or band you plug in.

For example, when you type in “The Allman Brothers Band,” this is the map that pops up. You can see all the members of the Allman Brothers “family,” from Widespread Panic to Little Feat (click on image to enlarge).

Pretty cool stuff! The maps the site builds are fairly comprehensive, but I have noticed some notable omissions in some cases. For example, when you type in Neil Young, it creates a map (click to enlarge) without Buffalo Springfield on it.

That’s a major omission. In addition to Young, Buffalo Springfield included Steven Stills and Richie Furay, among others. I’ve found other omissions, but I’m not here to nitpick.

At the very least, Music-Map is a fun and educational resource to help us “music tourists” connect the dots between artists. It can help you find bands you may have never heard, but are in the same family tree as some of your old favorites. It’s a quick simple way to find new music to enjoy.
