Self-Care Saturday

I know, it’s not art related, but it kind of is. As a creative person, it’s easy to get bogged down and forget to take a minute to make sure I’m doing ok.

This topic has been on my mind for quite a while and it has definitely picked up steam on the internet. I never really understood what self-care meant, but over the last year and a half, figuring it out has been a life line. As I may have mentioned before, I realized, for me, it’s about tiny breaks through out the day. It’s about doing things that give me energy and limiting things that steal it, even if I like it. I don’t have to wait until the end of the week *cough* to do a big thing for myself. Especially if I’m too exhausted to enjoy it. It seems obvious, but I’ve been known to miss the obvious from time to time.

However, I would like to add some tips here at the end of the week, just to remind myself and hopefully you, that we could all use something nice once in a while. It will be like Monday Motivation, but all about you instead of whatever you have to do for someone else that week. I can’t promise I’ll be any more consistent than I have been, but I’m going to try. I realized one thing that drains me is social media. It’s also really shady. And that’s not even getting into the problems with their reporting feature.

I realized a couple of years ago one reason I didn’t want to blog as much was because social media took care of that for me. I could quickly post what I want. The apps were easier to use and more predictable than the WordPress app. It was easy-ish to get people’s attention. I didn’t even mind I would lose out on any advertising money and growing my website. That was foolish, but I digress.

All around, social media just isn’t the place for me any more so even though I can’t promise I’ll post more often, I am weaning myself off the sites that were my outlet. I mean, if people are gonna hate-read me, I should at least get the advertising residuals, right?

So, here we are. The first self-care Saturday. I need to confess, I won’t actually be writing these on Saturdays. One of my main self-care items is to stay away from any and all electronic devices on Saturdays. I also don’t work. I set aside one day where I get a break from the constant buzz and force myself to do anything but get online or draw/paint/do art stuff.

So look at this adorable red panda and then maybe get off the internet. Or don’t because the internet helps you chill. I don’t judge. I just want you to be happy.

If your compassion does not include yourself, it is incomplete. — Jack Kornfield.

Feel free to add your own self-care tips in the comments. I could always use some new ideas.
