Veterans Day

Veterans Day

Today is Veterans Day. It is that one “official” day (unlike Memorial Day) that has been specifically earmarked for all of us to pay tribute to all American veterans – living or dead – who have served their country honorably during war or peacetime.

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11th became a national holiday beginning in 1938.

The military men and women who serve and protect us and our way of life can be found all around us in the communities in which we live. They are all around us—some still carry the physical and emotional scars of the battles they fought, some are still fighting these battles every day. Saying “thank you” is a good start, but more should be done.

Besides recognition on “their day” they need our help and support in many, many ways. Each of us can be the light in their lives if we just do something – maybe it’s supporting a charity with a monetary contribution or a contribution of our time and support. Just do something – big or small – to make your “thank you” more meaningful and genuine.
