Creating Screen Recordings with QuickTime for Mac

Ever wonder how to create a video tutorial using your Mac’s native app, QuickTime?

Getting Started with QuickTime Screencast Recordings on Your Mac

The first thing you need to do is load QuickTime player.

NOTE: After you click on the QuickTime icon, a dialog box may appear. Just ignore this option by clicking the [Done] button at the bottom of the screen.

Select “file” from the top left hand corner of your screen and select “New Screen Recording”.

Initial Setup

Before you start, click on the little down around next to the record button. This is where you review your current settings for the recording.

If you want to record your voiceover immediately as you create the video, select your microphone.

And, if you want to show your mouse clicks as you record, select show mouse clicks in recording.

Activating Your QuickTime Screen Recording

Now it’s time to press the record button.

At this stage you’ll be given the option of recording the whole screen or just a portion of the screen. You can do that by dropping and dragging your mouse around the portion of the screen that you would like to capture.

If you would like to change the capture settings, just press the [esc] escape key on your keyboard to reset the parameters, which re-actives this dialog box again.




This time, I’m going to press “Record”, and  click anywhere on the background so I can record the whole screen at one time.

QuickTime will now record all of the actions that you perform on a screen.

Capturing Your On-screen Actions

At this point, everything you do on your screen right will be recorded in the QuickTime screen capture. As an example, I’ve opened n a Word document and type some text.

Stopping Your Screen Recording

Once you have completed all of the actions that you want to record it’s time to press the stop button. That’s located in the top right hand side of the screen up in the Menu Bar.

Once you press the button you will then be able to see a playback of your clip.

Saving Your Screen Capture Video for Publishing

Once you’ve reviewed your screen capture and are happy with the results, make sure to save your work!

To do this, select [Save] from the [File] menu.

Now, choose a location to save your screen recording on your hard drive.

Publish Online Using The Native “Sharing” Mac Feature

Alternatively, you can also upload your clip to your preferred media channel by clicking on the [Upload] button next to the play controllers at the bottom of the QuickTime video screen.

Perfecting (Editing) Your Screen Recording Inside of QuickTime

But WAIT… wait if you want to remove the screen recording at the beginning or end to clean up the overall video?
