Yesterday, I showed you how to use the Omnigrip 5″ x 5″ Ruler and the OLFA 45 mm Ergonomic Rotary Cutter to cut the pieces for your Scrappy Houses Quilt. Now, let’s start sewing!
Stitch on the drawn line to sew a 1¾” square to the top of each 3″ x 5″ strip.
Trim excess fabric from the black square only.
Sew 1¾” squares to top of 3″ strips
Fold the trimmed square back over the 3″ x 5″ strip and press.
Fold the trimmed square back over the 3″ x 5″ strip.
Sew 1¾” squares to the other top corners in the same way. Trim and press.
Sew 1¾” squares to the remaining top corners.
Now it is time to add the doors. Cut rectangles from the 2″ x 5″ strips for the doors. My doors vary in size, but most are about 1¼” x 2″. Be creative and design your doors!
Arrange the door shapes on the houses as desired.
Use a dab of Odif 505 Temporary Adhesive Glue Stick on the back of each door shape to hold it in place
Place a small rectangle of Sulky Tear-Easy stabilizer under the door shape on the back of the house block. Another dab of Odif 505 Temporary Adhesive Glue Stick will hold it in place.
Use Odif 505 Temporary Adhesive Glue Stick to hold the door in place.
Stitch around the door using a decorative stitch. I used a blanket stitch, but feel free to experiment with other stitches on your machine. Remove excess stabilizer when stitching is finished. You᾽ll find that the Sulky Tear-Easy is very easy to remove.
Stitch around door shapes.
Background Squares
From the remaining background fabric, cut 20 – 3″ squares. This is another good time to use your Omnigrip 5″ x 5″ Ruler!
Now it’s time to arrange your houses on a design wall or similar surface. Make 3 rows with 5 houses in each row. Once you have decided on your arrangement, sew a 3″ background square to the top of the houses in Row 1.
Sew a 3″ square to the top and bottom of the houses in Row 2.
Sew a 3″ square to the bottom of the houses in Row 3.
Sew 3″ background squares to the house blocks.
Odif 505 Temporary Adhesive Glue Stick and Sulky Tear-Easy hold all the pieces in place while I sew! Be sure to come back tomorrow and I’ll show you how to put the house rows together and make the border.
