Happy New Year! And welcome to my version of Spectrum’s Block 7 Quilt-A-Long (QAL) 2020 quilt design, featuring fabrics from the Wave Texture collection by Benartex.
Half the blocks are done, and we’re on the home stretch. But before I get started with Block 7, I’d like to show my version of the Spectrum quilt design, as a reminder of what my quilt will look like.
This block will be made entirely of half-square-triangles (HSTs). It will be quick and simple to make.
Constructed from half-square triangles (HST), flying geese and squares, here’s a look at Block 7.
TIP It’s always a good idea to read the entire post before starting the block.
Below is the design layout diagram for Block 7. I’ll refer to it later in this post.
For Block 7, seven different colored fabrics from the Wave Texture collection are needed.
The fabric cutting directions are as follows:
Fabric A Cut (4) 2″ x 2″ squares from 2966-20 Cayenne
Fabric B Cut (2) 6″ x 6″ squares from 2966-20 Cayenne
Fabric C Cut (1) 6″ x 6″ square from 2966-55 Sky
Fabric D Cut (2) 6″ x 6″ squares from 2966-53 Cobalt
Fabric E Cut (4) 2½” x 2½” squares from 2966-32 Amber
Fabric F Cut (1) 6″ x 6″ square from 2966-39 Tangerine
Fabric G Cut (2) 3″ x 3″ rectangles from 2966-55 Sky
Fabric H Cut (1) 3″ x 3″ square from 2966-19 Dark Red
Fabric I Cut (1) 3″ x 3″ square from 2966-38 Pumpkin
On the wrong side of the C and D fabrics make a vertical and a horizontal line 3″ from the edges (through the center), then make two diagonal lines going corner to corner.
On the back of the G fabrics make one diagonal line going corner to corner.
Pair the fabric pieces together in sets as follows, with right sides together:
B with C
B with D
D with F
G with H
G with I
Note: All seam allowances for this block are ¼”.
With pairs together, sew a seam on each side of all diagonal lines. When all the seams are sewn, cut along each vertical horizontal and diagonal lines as shown below.
Press each set of HST pairs open and trim each HST pair to measure 2½” x 2½” square.
TIP When all pressing and trimming is complete, label the color sets and ensure each set of HST pairs are kept separate from each other.
Using the layout diagram shown earlier in this post as a guide, place all 36 pieces of the block in their correct spot beside your sewing machine.
Sew the HST pairs together into horizontal rows.
Sew the rows together, then press to complete the block.
The Block 7 of the Spectrum QAL 2020 is now complete. With this block completed, I’m already looking forward to start working on the next block. These Wave Texture fabrics are great to work with, and I’m really looking forward to seeing this quilt completed!
Come back next week when Claire shares her Block 8 in the Spectrum QAL 2020 quilt along. I’ll be back in two weeks with my version of Block 8!
