Ep. 121 – Jordan Hart

Hall H Show host Aaron Nabus talks to the creator, writer, and colorist of the indie comic book, Ripple Effects, Jordan Hart. This episode is also available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, Deezer, Amazon Music, and Spotify. The Hall H Show is produced by Aaron Nabus and Alex Benedicto and is the “Voice of Independent Creators.”

Show Notes:

On this episode, we welcome Jordan Hart, the creator, writer and colorist of the comic book Ripple Effects. Published by Fanbase Press, Ripple Effects explores how a down on his luck aspiring writer struggles to find balance as he navigates daily life, social challenges, high healthcare costs, and the responsibilities and insecurities that manifest while having both a superpower and an invisible illness (Type 1 Diabetes).

November is National Diabetes Month here in the United States and the trade paperback version of Ripple Effects was released on November, 15, 2022 so we’re honored to have Jordan on this episode.

Ripple Effects Questions:

  • Before we talk about Ripple Effects, would you mind talking about your own invisible illness and how it influenced your wanting to create Ripple Effects?
  • If you were at a comic convention, how would you describe Ripple Effects to the people walking by your table?
  • How long have you been working on this story and was there a particular event that helped direct you to this particular story?
  • Could you tell us about a few of the main characters? Are they based on anyone you know personally? The main protagonist, George, was based on someone you used to work with, right?
  • From start to finish, were there any challenges that you had difficulty resolving? If so, what were they and how did you overcome them?
  • Who is on the creative team and how did you find them?
  • Can you tell us about how you connected with Fanbase Press and how you decided they were a good fit to publish Ripple Effects? Do you have any advice for other comic book creators when it comes to finding a publisher?
  • Looks like you had a busy schedule at San Diego Comic-Con promoting Ripple Effects this past July. Can you tell us a little bit of your experience there?

Thunder Round Questions:

  • What’s your kryptonite?
  • How did you find graphic design?
  • Who are some graphic designers that you admire?
  • What motivated you to want to write comics?
  • What was the first comic book that you read?
  • What was growing up in Milwaukee like?
  • What was 11 year Jordan like? What kind of TV shows did you look forward to watching as a kid?
  • Could you please describe your perfect cheeseburger? What’s your favorite place to grab a cheeseburger in Los Angeles?
  • What’s something new that you recently learned?
  • What’s one thing you hated as a child but love now as an adult?
  • If a movie was made about your life, what kind of music would be on the soundtrack?
  • What word would you use to describe yourself? What word do you think other people might use to describe you?
  • If you could have a meal with anyone alive now or from history, who would it be with and where would you eat at?
  • One of the characters in Ripple Effects can teleport, if you could teleport to anywhere in the world right now, where would you go? Why did you pick this place?
  • If you could tell your younger self (when you were a senior in high school) one thing, what would it be?
  • What three TV shows could you watch over and over and not get tired of them?
  • What do you hope to accomplish in the next 3- 5 years?
  • It’s 2am at your local karaoke joint. You get to sing the last song. What song do you sing?
  • What comic books do you look for at comic conventions?

Closing Pieces of Advice Questions:

  • A lot of seasoned writers tell younger writers to “write what you know.” But you have a different take. Could you please expand on that?
  • For creatives that also struggle with an invisible illness like yourself, do you have any encouraging words of advice?
