Show Notes:

Hello everyone! Aaron Nabus here and welcome to episode 102 of the Hall H Show!

Joining me on this episode is someone that I’ve been wanting to have on the show for a while now, the multi-talented Jenapher Zheng!

We first met in person briefly at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 when I was on a panel with her good friend, Kaitlyn Fae (episode 66 guest). Both Jenapher and Kaitlyn are also podcast hosts on the Pangeekery podcast (part of the Geekish Network), where I was a guest in 2020.

Jenapher is an actor, gamer, podcaster, Twitch streamer, visual artist and writer. Speaking of writing, a short movie she wrote, called Borrowed Light was recently fully funded on Seed & Spark (the campaign ends on April 14, 2021) and will start production soon.

Also, congrats to Jenapher for recently getting 1,000 followers on her Twitch channel!

We covered a wide range of topics like her movie, her geek origin story, creative journey, and so much more. During our conversation, she was also willing to be a bit vulnerable, touching on childhood bullying, being diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, and also reading a poem she recently wrote that encapsulated her feelings concerning the murders of six Asian women in Atlanta, Georgia in March of 2021.

It’s conversations like these that keep me motivated to continue sharing the stories of these incredible creators that I’ve been fortunate enough to meet. Enjoy! ~Aaron

About Borrowed Light:

Synopsis: Molly and Desi are headed their separate ways for the first time. Desi finds a friend in fellow classmate and musician Tricia. Molly, on the other hand, feels tethered to the spiraling impulsivity and isolation that stems from her untreated bipolar disorder. The situation comes to a head when Desi receives a distressing call from Molly.

This film is a very personalized illustration of how shame and silence beget one another. It is the most vulnerable stories I have written to date, and draws from my personal coming-of-age experiences struggling with mental health, especially as a first-generation Chinese American. The friendship between characters Desi and Molly is founded on intimate knowledge of each other’s mental struggles, though immaturity, shame, and the need to save face prevent them from connecting when they need it the most. I’ve found that, as a person diagnosed with Bipolar II, I’ve had to do more leg work than medical professionals in paving the way for my health and balance. I’ve felt abandoned by institutions of faith, disappointed by the failings of the healthcare system, and have had to carve out my own plan to wellness by addressing my needs face-on. This film is my attempt to present Bipolar disorder in a humanistic, honest way, and not in the sensationalized caricatures which the media so often portrays. I strongly believe that if we can see the human behind the disorder, if we can safely voice ourselves despite the shame, we can forge a path to recovery and acceptance.
