Ep. 79 – Karla Nappi (SDCC 2019)

Indie Comic Book creator, Karla Nappi, joined the Hall H Show at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 to talk about her comic book, Duplicant. This episode is also available on Google Play, iTunes, Stitcher, iHeart Radio and Spotify. The Hall H Show is hosted by Aaron Nabus and Alex Benedicto and is the “Voice of Independent Creators.”

Show Notes:

Our third Hall H Show podcast from San Diego Comic-Con 2019 (listen to our two previous SDCC 2019 episodes with comic book, art and graphic design educator, Michael Dooley and cosplayer and podcaster, Tim Ludy) features television writer and script coordinator, Karla Nappi. She is also the writer and creator of the independent comic book, Duplicant.

I first met Karla at one of Rylend Grant’s panels at WonderCon a couple of years ago and I’ve been wanting to get her on the Hall H Show for a while now. She recently moved from Santa Monica, CA back to her hometown, Oradell, in New Jersey, so I’m happy that I was able to connect with her at San Diego Comic-Con.

Karla was addicted to TV as child and it was one of the ways she bonded with her dad, watching shows like I Love Lucy and The X-Files.

They also shared a love for sci-fi, Indiana Jones movies, animation and musicals. Surprisingly, both Karla and her dad also appreciated the macabre. While watching Silence of the Lambs, they didn’t shy away from the ending scene, while the rest of the movie theater covered their eyes in terror. Perhaps this explains the dark side of her entertaining debut comic book, Duplicant, which draws inspiration from the movie, Minority Report.

While the first two issues are completed (I definitely want to read a third), and were completely self-funded, she is currently looking for a publisher to help her complete Duplicant, which she envisions being a total of 15 issues for the initial arc.

I enjoyed this conversation with Karla, where I learned about some of the inspiration behind Duplicant, the importance of having a close group of like minded creators to bounce ideas off of and in putting your ego aside and realizing when you need more information on how to do something, which Karla did when she felt she needed to be educated more on comic book writing. In fact, it was her decision to take the comic book writing class at Meltdown Comics, taught by Jim Higgins, that put her on the path to getting her first ever comic book produced.

I knew that it was a type of writing that I had no idea how to do and I knew that I had to be educated about it and that’s what brought me back go to Meltdown Comics again to take the writing class I took with Jim Higgins, which is where I work-shopped the first issue.

We also do quick thunder round and I find out what television show she would love to write for…enjoy!
