Happy New Year! 2019 is starting just like 2018 ended, with our nation in turmoil. That’s got me thinking about something. As I get older, something becomes more obvious to me all the time, and it’s this: The people who are the most miserable, the most unhappy, the most filled with anger, the people least accepting of others, are those people with not nearly enough art in their lives. Not enough culture. They don’t listen to much Music or read books. They don’t attend concerts or the theater, and they never check out museums. The rich history of cinema doesn’t exist to them. There are whole worlds they’ve closed themselves off from. Unfortunately, these days we need art in our lives more than ever.
My point is: If you don’t have art in your life, in some form or another, you’re in real trouble.
This is not a criticism, and I’m not casting aspersions on folks that may fit this description. I’m simply noting an observation and suggesting a solution.
Life is so short, and there are millions of things big and small out there doing their best to beat us down and knock us out every damn day. It’s incredibly easy to fall prey to them and give in to the Darkness. Art is the light that pushes away the edges of that darkness a little bit. Art is like magic, except that it’s real.
Humans are a uniquely Creative species; the need to express ourselves artistically and to experience others’ creative endeavors is programmed into the deepest levels of our DNA. If that desire isn’t nurtured, part of us dies. I truly believe this.
When the world’s got you down, get some art into your life. It doesn’t matter what, it doesn’t have to be “good,” it doesn’t have to be something created by a professional. Better yet, put your creativity cap on and make your own!
