REVIEW: The Outlands – Child of Wrath (2023)

A One-shot comic by Tyler Edwards, Penciled, Inked and Colored by Valentin Quinones, and Lettered and Edited By Patrick Hickey Jr.

Don’t stand up. Don’t stand out.

I had the opportunity to get a sneak peek at a piece of a new multimedia initiative by an independent comic publisher called Legacy Comix recently. Their first release, The Outlands: Child of Wrath by Tyler Edwards, is a dystopian tale of what it takes for one man to get so fed up with the status quo that he hits the breaking point. With nothing to lose, the first embers of rebellion are starting to burn in the city of Dios. The book The Outlands: Child of Wrath is a captivating introduction to what promises to be an intriguing series. As noted by the publisher, this comic serves as a precursor to a larger publishing endeavor, a full comic book series and a dystopian book trilogy. Set in a world where simply being different can lead to dire consequences, the story follows a resilient band of outcasts as they navigate the treacherous landscape of survival.

““We can do better, we can make life better…” they were not the words of a rebel, just a kind-hearted man who wanted to help. Victor watched as his father was arrested for “disturbing the peace” and branded as a heretic. He was forced to stand in front of the crowd while his father was dragged into the Market Square to be executed publicly for his crime of caring.”

The Outlands: Child of Wrath is merely a taste of the larger story, and since I was pretty bummed out that the book ended right when everything was getting really good, this book did its job of getting me excited to see what comes next. The story is somewhat of an origin story for a character named Victor that had literally everything taken from him. We are not able to see him start what I assume is a revenge spree as of yet, but one can only assume that his vow at the end of this story is going to lead up to something crazy. I’m sure there will be plenty of like-minded freedom fighters in Dios to help Vic, and my fingers are crossed I get to see it.

While short, I enjoyed The Outlands: Child of Wrath and am excited to see what comes next. This one-shot lays out the groundwork and does a bit of decent world-building for a larger storyline that fits in very well with the current market of dystopian young adult books, films, and TV shows. With any luck, the comic will be launched and the novels will be on the horizon, because I love a good slice of dystopia. If you are looking to support independant comics, give these guys a look, they seem to have all sorts of good stuff.
