Arcadia Pod’s Top Ten Kansas City Area Professional Wrestling Feuds of 2023 – #5

Once again, my intro from a few days ago:

“This year, I’m trying something different on my blog – I’m going through my local professional Wrestling coverage and doing a countdown of the ten (well 11 actually) Kansas City area professional wrestling feuds that I felt deserved some recognition. Since late last year, I have attended nearly THIRTY wrestling shows with my son, and have been blessed to have been there for some of the best professional wrestling I’ve seen in my entire life. As a passionate fan of professional wrestling, delving into the vastly underrated well of local talent and feuds has been a great experience.”

The Countdown so far:

  • HM – The Tonys Vs Storm Dior (TSW)
  • 10. Bert Candy VS Private Practice (NBW)
  • 9. Luke Langley’s Revenge Tour (CSW)
  • 8. Shooter Shylynn VS Aminah Belmont (Trailblazer)
  • 7. Max Sterling VS Trailblazer Locker Room
  • 6. Roscoe Leech VS The Premier

Make sure to drop me some comments on either social media or this very post about anything I may have missed, because….well this sums it up better than I can explain here:

Please don’t be offended if I have seemingly ignored something from a show I have never been to. I sadly don’t get to attend KCXW much at all, for example, so I can’t speak on any shows from them, but that’s something I hope to change. The same goes for a lot of companies in Central Kansas that occasionally come over here (HCW comes to mind). As companies get more of a digital footprint, perhaps this will change as I can keep up with their product online at my leisure. I mostly follow three companies because I don’t really have time to go to every show that comes through; occasionally, I’ll dabble in something like World League Wrestling, but it’s very rare. With that in mind, hopefully everyone enjoys this, and maybe I can see other lists like this from other fans!

Number five is once again Trailblazer Championship Wrestling, and its one that may surprise everyone that doesn’t read by blog too often.

Note: I may have copied some of the text from older articles, I give myself permission to plagiarize from myself.

5. Bobby Jo Black VS Salum Gust

I’m sure my pick for number five on the Top Ten Kansas City Area Professional Wrestling Feuds of 2023 will surprise some folks, but longtime readers of my blog should be expecting that I’m going to show some love to the feud between Bobby Joe Black and Salum Gust from Trailblazer Championship Wrestling. Sometimes you don’t need flashy highspots, top rope 720s, or blood to tell a great story and this series of matches that ran throughout 2023 exemplifies that. This feud simply told a good story involving a guy getting a win in a feel good moment, drawing the ire of a guy whose mind has been poisoned by a madman, and their subsequent battles to prove who is better. Sometimes wrestling is at its best when you keep it simple.

Throughout the year, Max Sterling and Salum Gust had been trying to run roughshod over Trailblazer for months, and for a while there has always been two country boys ready to put them in their places, Bobby Joe Black and his Brother Johnnie Jo BlackSalum Gust had many opportunities to step away from his numerous run-ins with Bobby and Johnny, but it seemed as if he was on a mission to end Bobby’s career after a couple of humiliating losses. So how did this all start?

When I spoke with Bobby Jo Black during the summer, he came to the same conclusions I had come to. Salum Gust was furious that he lost the Bunkhouse Brawl, and has seemingly devoted his short-term wrestling career to, as Bobby put it, “Twisting his head off”. Black rode on his win from that match for more than a month, it empowered him and gave him the confidence to rack up some more impressive wins all over the state. Gust, however, brooded and seethed, and let his emotions cloud his mind. Afterwards, Gust and Black butted heads all over the Midwest for a couple of different companies.

After Tornado Alley, a show where Gust somewhat “got revenge”, one would have thought that Gust would have been satisfied, but was apparently more than happy to accept a challenge to prove was still stronger. Bobby stated in the aforementioned interview: “The last match Salum and I had made me very upset with myself. Since then, I’ve been putting extra hard work in the gym and on the farm. So I’m not only confident I’ll lift Salum up and slam him down. I’m very confident.” Bobby Joe Black did the unthinkable at Star Spangled Slammer, and was able to bodyslam Salum Gust, securing his win and in his mind validating his initial win at Bunkhouse Brawl.

In footage that was posted to the TCW Facebook Page, Salum Gust was spotted, likely right after Star Spangled Slammer, attacking Bobby Joe Black in the Parking lot. Yet another challenge was issued, and it was time for both men to call in their respective “lumberjacks” to hopefully ensure a fair fight. For those “not in the know”, a lumberjack match is a stipulation match where the ring is surrounded by wrestlers that are tasked with making sure both competitors stay in the ring. Unfortunately, this also means that upwards of ten extra dudes end up beating on anyone unfortunate enough to step onto the floor, intentional or not.

The lumberjacks were Myron De’Monne, Rahim De La Suede, Moses, Dekin Cane, Dr. Isin, Corn Boi, Rory Fox, Jared Thumb, Van Bam Winkle, The Iceman, and Johnnie Jo Black.

Footage from the TCW Facebook page

One could clearly tell that battle lines were drawn amongst two factions, and you better believe that the Gust delegation tried to take some liberties with Bobby when they could. Unfortunately for them, Bobby Joe Black has iron-clad tenacity and never gave up. Bobby Joe Black was able to fold Salum Gust up and score yet another big upset! Conspicuously absent from Salum’s side was none other than “Madman” Max Sterling, who seemingly only hangs out with Salum if it fits his needs. Salum Gust is always there to be Sterling’s muscle, but I find it funny that you see no hide nor hair of him on the flipside. If Gust even got away from the sick mind of “The Madman”, I wonder what he could do? I talked about this a bit with my #7 entry of this series, check it out!

After losing The Bunkhouse Brawl, a bodyslam match, and finally a lumberjack match, one can only hope that Salum Gust will shift his sights to another target, but I have this sick feeling in the pit of my stomach that this isn’t over. Then again, Trailblazer fans haven’t really seen Salum Gust since, could he be a changed man, or could he be spiraling even deeper into his own pit of rage. If and when he comes back is going to be intense, and people are going to get hurt. Either way Bobby Joe and Johnnie Jo Black are going to be there to make sure Trailblazer doesn’t descend into complete chaos upon Salum’s return, and for that I’m sure the fans are very thankful.

In closing, despite being relative newcomers to the sport, both of these guys entertain the hell out of me, and my son absolutely loves rooting for Bobby Joe whenever he can. If you are sleeping on anyone I mentioned here or Trailblazer Championship Wrestling in general, you are missing out!
