REVIEW: Tri States Wrestling Bulldog Brawl (2023)

A Live Professional Wrestling show from TSW

On the evening of August 26, 2023, Breckenridge, Missouri witnessed an electrifying display of athleticism and entertainment as it played host to its inaugural Tri States Wrestling (TSW) event. Triple digit temperatures gave way to a chill in the air and a slight drizzle that made what I assume is an otherwise stuffy high school gymnasium the perfect venue for a night of action-packed bouts. TSW brought six matches to the hundreds of cheering fans from all over North-Western Missouri including a match with the TSW Tag Team Championships on the line, and another with the TSW World Heavyweight Championship up for grabs. The show, dubbed “Bulldog Brawl” was a charity event for two major causes – The Against All Odds Animal ResQ organization out of Hamilton, Missouri, and the Breckenridge High School Class of 2024 seniors, who efficiently managed the concession stands throughout the event.

For the fans in attendance, the fun was not limited to the wrestling matches and food. Most wrestlers, and even TSW themselves, had merchandise available including everything from T-shirts to fake novelty mustaches. Many performers were available for photo ops, autographs, or perhaps just a firm handshake and congratulations. There was a raffle towards the end of the night where a grand-prize winner had a choice between movie tickets, an autographed steel chair, or an autographed poster. A number of dogs up for adoption were on hand from The Against All Odds Animal ResQ, creating fun photo ops for the wrestlers and fans alike. With any luck, some of the dogs will be going home to their “furrever home” tonight. As one can imagine, TSW provides a fun, family-friendly wrestling product that an entire family can enjoy, and children especially will have a blast.

If you want other wrestling shows, I would recommend Fite.TV. You can get some FITE credits (10 dollars I believe) with the following code: “6m6lyyn”. I’m sure there are other ways to watch some of these, but FITE has a solid interface and has been worth it so far.

The Card:

  • “The Unnatural Disaster” Salum Gust Defeated The Math Magician
  • “The Monarch” Jeremy Wyatt Defeated Wrex Amadeus to retain the US Highway Championship
  • Fajita Taker Defeated “Not Your Friend” Branden Juarez by DQ after he was attacked
  • “The Classic” Warren Adams Defeated Cornelius J Poppington (aka CJP)
  • Fajita Taker and Math Magician Defeated “Not Your Friend” Branden Juarez, “The Unnatural Disaster” Salum Gust, and Jack Norton to retain the TSW Tag Team Championship belts. This was a 3 on 2 match with no DQ, no count out rules.
  • “The Biggest Wrestler Ever” Franco Varga Defeated The Ice Man to win the TSW World Heavyweight Championship.

DISCLAIMER:

I’ve come up with this little disclaimer since I have some new readers:

READ MY FULL DISCLAIMER HERE

I usually go through a show and pull a half dozen or so things that I thought were significant or that I liked and concentrate on them, usually ignoring stuff I did not. You might think some of my choices are dumb, and that’s OK! We can all like different things, that’s what makes something like wrestling so great.

My Thoughts:

Math Magician Hit with Too Many Variables to Complete the Equation:

Salum Gust (sporting a very Harley Race-esque new look!) has been tearing it up in pretty much every professional wrestling company in the area due to his unquenched thirst for barbarity and violence. He had his sights set on making a statement at this show, and as a result underestimated the Math Magician, who recently came off of an injury. Being a veteran of the sport, and a former multi-time champion, the Math Magician saw through a lot of Salum’s tricks. Had it not been for outside interference from Branden Juarez, the Math Magician would have likely secured the win. Juarez And Gust formed a bond at this show that continued throughout the night, much to the chagrin of the fans in attendance. It seems that wherever Gust goes, he attracts these sorts of guys.

Wrex Had a Hell of a Night, Hopefully Many More to Come:

“The Monarch” Jeremy Wyatt is an infamous figure in Kansas City-area professional wrestling. His “ends justify the means” style signifies his willingness to bend the rules at pretty much every moment he can, and as a result is not somebody to take lightly. He has held many championship belts throughout his career and has a ring-awareness that is basically unmatched in the area. This is why many would argue that Wrex Amadeus was facing his biggest threat in what could be the biggest match of his career at Bulldog Brawl. Amadeus showed an unwavering level of heart and determination in the match, nearly pulling off the big win a number of times, but that veteran skill held by Wyatt was just too much. It’s a tough loss for Amadeus, but one can only assume there will be many more. Jeremy Wyatt seemed to feed off of the animosity of the crowd towards himself, absolutely reveling in the boos when he held the golden strap up high once again. This was one my my most anticipated matches of the evening, and it really delivered.

Juarez is NOT a Fan of The Sizzle:

One cannot find two men more diametrically opposed than Fajita Taker and Branden Juarez. Fajita Taker is a fun-loving masked wrestler who dances to the ring and delights crowds young and old alike. Juarez, by comparison, is not wrestling to make friends or have fans. He wants to simply hurt people, get a paycheck, and go home. This attitude was on full view at Bulldog Brawl. While Fajita Taker technically won this match, it was because Juarez called up his dastardly accomplices to give an unrelenting beatdown to Fajita Taker. The Math Magician, who is the second half of a tag team with Fajita Taker and current champions at the time, came to his aid and issued a challenge. The Tag Team Championships would be on the line if they agreed to a no DQ, no count-out match, and they’d even let it be three competitors against two. This shocking admission worried the crowd, but the anticipation was very palpable.

“CJP! CJP! CJP!”:

Hailing from Cameron, Missouri, Cornelius J. Poppington made his long-awaited debut for Tri States Wrestling at Bulldog Brawl. His opponent for the evening was “The Classic” Warren Adams, a competitor known more for worrying about his looks and throwing childish fits in the ring than his actual wrestling prowess. The fans were firmly behind Poppington from the moment the bell rang, as chants of “CJP! CJP! CJP!” boomed through the gymnasium. Unfortunately, however, Adams was able to cheat his way to a cheap victory, his first in TSW. Adams is the kind of guy that won’t care if his win was tainted, here’s hoping that CJP can get a bit of revenge in the future and balance the scales.

Don’t Try to Play the Odds Against the Math magician!

The odds of winning this match were definitely stacked against Fajita Taker and Math Magician, but to the delight of everyone in attendance, the two masked men were able to secure the win and keep their tag team championship belts just a bit longer. Early on in the match, Jack Norton suffered an injury after falling from the ring to the floor and was ushered to the backstage area. With the match forced to be two on two, most advantages that Juarez and Gust were counting on were now gone, and the luchadores were able to get their revenge! It was fun to see what was ostensibly a street fight at this show, and despite seeing some blood from Norton, the kids in the audience went absolutely insane during this match!

“The Biggest Wrestler Ever” Lives up to his Name:

Coming straight off one of his numerous international tours, Franco Varga was back in Missouri for one reason and one reason alone – to accept the Ice Man’s open challenge for his TSW World Heavyweight Championship. Varga acknowledged how much he knew the fans loved the Ice Man, and discussed how much he respected him going into this match. The Ice Man has held the belt since early May (after winning it in Chilicothe) and has done an expert job at defending it against all challengers up to this point. Unfortunately for this near hometown hero, “The Biggest Wrestler Ever” was too much of a challenge and secured the win. The match ended with a handshake and the Ice Man leaving by his own power, with many in attendance thinking the overt show of respect and sportsmanship between the two men was refreshing considering what had transpired in previous matches.

Conclusion:

The general attitude of the crowd in Breckenridge, Missouri seemed incredibly positive, and I’m sure that fans in attendance will be eagerly anticipating the return of Tri States Wrestling at a future date. If you are wondering about how successful the show was, this is a tidbit of news from TSW staff:

“The 1st ever Bulldog Brawl was a MAJOR success! Over 33% of the town of Breckenridge Missouri showed up and shelled out! Already two dogs have been adopted from the Against All Odds Animal ResQ from what we have heard, and more leads were generated!”

The TSW Facebook Page

For those unwilling to wait that long, TSW will be embarking on a Fall Tour throughout the state of Missouri in late September / early October, with details on ticket sales forthcoming.

Overall, I had a blast at this show, and if you are looking for a fun wrestling show to attend in North-Western Missouri, you really can’t get much better than seeing these guys. With any luck I will easily be able to attend one (maybe even TWO) shows during the tour in October, so stay tuned for that.
