PREVIEW: Tri States Wrestling – Bulldog Brawl (August 26, 2023)

A Live Professional Wrestling Event

I was sadly unable to make the last event from Tri States Wrestling due to my work schedule, but I am happy to announce that I will be in attendance (barring some kind of emergency, of course) for their next show on Saturday, August 26, 2023 in Breckenridge, Missouri. As I stated in my previous TSW review, I am not too familiar with this North-Western area of Missouri, so this will be a night of many firsts for me. It will be my first time in Breckenridge as well as my first time seeing some of the announced talent! Speaking of firsts, Bulldog Brawl also marks TSW’s debut in Breckenridge Missouri, and as the name implies, this is a benefit show for a VERY worthy charity.

The Against All Odds Animal ResQ is an organization out of Hamilton, Missouri that specializes in caring for senior, handicapped/disabled, and abandoned animals until they can find their “furrever homes”. Tri States Wrestling has collaborated with them before, with previous events appearing to be a fundraiser / adoption drive of sorts. I am not 100% sure if that will be the case this time around, but either way, it’s great to see a wrestling company looking out for the “little guys” of the world, and you can’t get much more vulnerable than neglected and abused animals.

This is the last event being held before the company’s Fall 2023 Tour. Taking place in October 2023, the tour promises stops in Hannibal MO, St Joseph MO, Chillicothe MO, and more. I obviously won’t be able to hit up all of those, but I will try my hardest to get to at least one show by them during that time – maybe I can use one of my vacation days during the week? If you are sleeping on Tri States Wrestling and live in or around the Kansas City area, or a 100 mile radius from there, you ought to really check them out. Independent professional wrestling is hopping in this area nowadays, and you can’t find a better way for a family to spend a day in a relatively inexpensive manner than one of these shows!

Bulldog Brawl is being held in the Breckenridge Missouri High School Gym. 400 W Colfax St, Breckenridge, MO 64625. See below for ticket information, and I hope to see you there! Until then, let’s take a look at some of the announced matches for the show and start up that hype train!

The Iceman VS “The Biggest Wrestler Ever” Franco Varga for the TSW Championship

I was there at Sliced Bread Slam when The Iceman did the unthinkable – having clawed the TSW Heavyweight Championship from the hands of the nefarious Luke Langley. Langley tried his best to avoid the confrontation when things weren’t going his way (it was technically four matches after restarts!), but thankfully, The Iceman, fueled by the energy of his hometown Chillicothe, MO fans, was able to secure that win. Unless I am mistaken, this will be The Iceman’s second defense of this belt, and he doesn’t appear ready to put it down just yet.

This will be my first time seeing the challenger Franco Varga, but from what I can tell via social media, he has become a very accomplished competitor in a VERY short amount of time. He has competed everywhere from Japan to Australia, and has made at least two previous appearances in TSW, all in winning efforts. Varga has deemed most challenges beneath him, but the promise of that oh so sweet gold around The Iceman’s waist is VERY tempting. In a recent social media post, he thanks TSW for the opportunity and says that “he knows what he has to do to become champion, and knows exactly who he needs to do it to”. Varga implies The Iceman better be prepared to go home empty-handed. Strong words indeed from the challenger, but can the dogs bark match his bite?

Wrex Amadeus VS “The Monarch” Jeremy Wyatt for the US Highway Championship

This is, without a doubt, Wrex Amadeus’ biggest match ever in his professional wrestling career. He has put the work in at every venue he has wrestled in and trained for the day to hopefully carry a heavy golden strap around his waist. Unfortunately for him, his opponent for this evening is none other than “The Monarch” Jeremy Wyatt, a man sometimes known as “The King of Kansas City Wrestling.” Wyatt made short work of Dr. Isin in Chillicothe and I fully assume he assumes Amadeus will follow suit. If Wrex can somehow pull this win off, his career will be on a trajectory straight to the moon, something that I think his fans are more than ready for.

Math magician VS “The Unnatural Disaster” Salum Gust

Salum Gust is a terrifying monster of a man, and not somebody that most wrestlers should want to mess with. I have discussed his many clashes with The Black Brothers in previous articles, and you better believe he’s going to be just as angry here as he is in other promotions. The thing is, that emotion, his anger, is exactly what an opponent needs to home in on to defeat him. He’s not unbeatable, and it may just take a man that knows probabilities and equations to calculate exactly when to strike and exploit that anger – enter Math Magician!

Math Magician is a long-time veteran of the ring, and a former champion in other promotions such as New Breed Wrestling. He’s a venerable fan-favorite that everyone loves, and perhaps his only real weakness for this show is that he’s coming off of an injury from last year. If his health is at 100%, I’m sure we will see him hit “The Number Cruncher” followed up by his 270 degree splash and score that win. My son appears to be really into math right now, so at the very least I’m sure he’ll want to meet Math Magician and give him a high five.

Fajita Taker VS Branden Juarez

You better be careful when eating Fajitas out in the open, because if Fajita Taker hears that sizzle, he’s going to leave you VERY hungry. Luckily, I’m pretty sure those won’t be on the menu at Breckenridge High School, so I guess we’ll have to settle for some high-flying lucha libre action instead. I have never seen Fajita Taker live and in-person, but I do dabble in watching NBW and KCXW on YouTube, so I am familiar with his spicy ring-work.

Standing diametrically opposed to him in pretty much every way is his opponent for the evening, Branden Juarez. Juarez is a powerhouse and brawler that loves to keep everything on the ground so he can rain hell on his opponents. It will be a battle of high flying versus outright violence which is exactly the sort of match-up that makes professional wrestling great. I have also never seen Juarez wrestle live, so this should be a treat for me in pretty much every way.

“The Classic” Warren Adams VS Cornelius Poppington

Even though my first experience with “The Classic” Warren Adams involved an embarrassing water bottle temper tantrum and numerous pleas for others to not hit his face, one can tell he has the potential to be a solid competitor. He just needs to get his act together, be more sportsman-like, and get on the winning side of things. He is booked against someone named Cornelius J Poppington, a man so mysterious that we don’t even have a picture of him as of yet. It’s hard to gauge what “The Classic” is up against, because all we really know about the mysterious man is that it’s his first wrestling match and he’s from Cameron, Missouri. Is Mr. Poppington really a first-timer or are some hijinks afoot? Based on the name alone, I do have one theory….hmmm….

New Belts?

Back in July, TSW Management mentioned that this set of shiny tag-team belts would be in play at the show, so I can’t wait to see what’s being planned. Usually, TSW has seven matches on a card, so I have a feeling we will have the above matches and a few more surprises!
