PREVIEW: Trailblazer Championship Wrestling – Emerald City Showdown – July 22, 2023

An upcoming live Wrestling show from Trailblazer Championship Wrestling

NOTE: If anything changes on the line-up I will try to update this if I can.

“Oh, Auntie Em – there’s no place like home!”

Wrestling fans! It’s time to slip on those sparkling ruby slippers (because who doesn’t have a few pairs, right?), click your heels together, and prepare to embark on a journey down the yellow brick road. Get ready to head all the way to The Merry Old Land of Oz (or I-35 to Ottawa, Kansas) for yet another unforgettable show brought to you by Trailblazer Championship Wrestling. Now, I can’t promise you’ll encounter any actual wizards handing out metaphorical body parts, but fear not! What you can definitely count on is a hefty dose of top-notch, family-friendly wrestling that’ll leave you with a huge smile on your face. Trailblazer Championship Wrestling’s Emerald City Showdown will be at the Ottawa National Guard Armory on July 22, 2023.

This will be TCW’s one year Anniversary show, and promises eight big matches this this time around. If I am not mistaken, this is by far the most matches TCW has had at one of their shows. Tickets can be purchased HERE and are selling fast. If you are interested, here’s the breakdown:

  • General Admission Only $15
  • Kids 12 and under Only $10
  • Kids 5 and under are Free!
  • To thank all our service men and women, all Veterans and active Military Personnel including their Families are FREE

Some big feuds to keep tabs on going into this show are obviously the ongoing saga between Bobby Joe Black and his arch-nemesis Salum Gust, unfinished business between the relentless “Madman” Max Sterling and “Astonishing” Austin Mulitalo that goes all the way back to Bunkhouse Brawl. There are also quite a few returning faces (that haven’t been there for a while) such as Dr. Isin and The Iceman to keep everything fresh and exciting. It’s going to be an amazing way to celebrate such a big anniversary, and I, for one, can’t wait until this weekend.

The Card:

Jared Thumb and “Rapid Delivery” Rory Fox VS Rocco The Barbarian and Dekin Cane

Something that I was oblivious to (since this will be only my fourth TCW show), was the fact that Jared Thumb has wrestled at pretty much every TCW show, and is 100% undefeated. If you ask me, that’s a pretty damn impressive fact! The trail of broken bodies left in the wake of his devastating Stunner is a testament to his prowess in the ring. Trained by none other than WWE’s Seth Rollins at the Black and Brave Wrestling Academy in 2017, Thumb is well on his way to carving a path towards greatness in the wrestling industry. The state of Kansas, in particular, is fortunate to witness his rise firsthand. For this match, Thumb will be joined by another fan-favorite wrestler from Iowa, “Rapid Delivery” Rory Fox. After a lengthy period of recovery from an injury that kept him out of the ring for most of 2022-3, Fox is making a triumphant return to the spotlight. Whenever Fox performs, the crowd is going to be going insane and I cannot wait.

Check out a promo HERE via the TCW Facebook Page

Thumb and Fox are going to be going up against none other than the ever-dominant Rocco the Barbarian and his manager Dekin Cane. The last time Cane was announced for a match, he weaseled out citing lingering suplex-related injuries courtesy of Curt Gannon. Cane replaced himself with “Miracle” Mike James, a staple of XWE in Salina, Kansas, and secured another win for his crew. It will be interesting to see if Cane laces the boots up yet again, considering his past as a dominant wrestler in his own right, or if yet another last minute audible keeps him on the sidelines. Could this be Thumb’s first taste of defeat? With so many variables at play, this will definitely be a match to look out for!

“The Little Blue Dragon” Tootie Lynn VS “The Phoenix Princess” Aminah Belmont w/ SBC

Oh lord, here we go again! Normally, being a huge fan of Tootie Lynn, I’d be hyping the imminent demise of any opponent she comes across. However, in this case, nobody can ignore the proverbial elephant in the room – and his name is SBC. For those unaware, SBC is basically a criminal mastermind, a person so skillful in subterfuge and cunning, that he has pulled wins out of absolute nowhere and become perhaps the most dominant manager in all of Kansas professional wrestling. That isn’t to deny any of the numerous talents that Aminah Belmont shows in basically every match she is in, but I have my doubts that she’d be as domineering in her standings in TCW without him. She has a tendency to “lose her cool”, so to speak, if something doesn’t go her way, and SBC keeps her in line.

Tootie has all the skills to be able to handle “The Phoenix Princess” at Emerald City Showdown as long as she keeps her tag-along in mind. I’m sure we are going to see a lot of hard-hitting punches and kicks, as well as some nunchuck action in the match, and that alone will be awesome depending on who gets “nunchucked”.

“Corn Boi” Kevin Gutierrez VS “Tha Whole Thang” Rahim De La Suede

This match is easily the tale of two entirely opposite mindsets going into the match within all of Trailblazer Championship Wrestling. On one hand you have “Corn Boi” Kevin Gutierrez, who I assume is still riding high from his win at Tornado Alley against the St. Louis powerhouse WARHORSE. He claims to “be powered by pure ethanol” and seems ready for pretty much anything TCW can throw at him. On the other you have “Tha Whole Thang” Rahim De La Suede, who suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of “The Yoga Monster” Mike Sydal at that very same show.

Gutierrez has some words for De La Suede HERE

One could fully assume that Gutierrez is simply going to run away with this one, but I wouldn’t be so quick to count De La Suede out. Not only does he have an impressive resume at other companies around here, but he has been a champion in the past. His own worst enemy is unfortunately his arrogance, something that usually works to his detriment. If Rahim actually goes into this match with a clear head, I could see him getting a HUGE upset here, but time will tell.

“The Unnatural Disaster” Salum Gust VS Bobby Joe Black in a Lumberjack Match

I won’t rewrite what I’ve already gone into great detail on going into this Lumberjack match, but if you are new to TCW, check out my preview of the previous show or my interview with Bobby Joe Black for more insight. I should try to contact Salum Gust to get his words on this matter, but I honestly feel for my safety even approaching the guy. With that said, this ongoing war between Bobby Joe Black and Salum Gust is easily one of my favorite things going on in local wrestling right now. Max Sterling and Salum Gust have been trying to run roughshod over TCW for months now, and for a while there has always been two country boys ready to put them in their places. Salum Gust has had many opportunities to step away from his numerous run-ins with Bobby Joe and Johnny Jo Black, but it seems like he’s on a mission to end Bobby’s career after a couple of humiliating losses. Many felt that this was likely all over after the Bodyslam match last month, but boy was that wrong.

Footage from the TCW Facebook page

In footage that was newly unearthed and posted to the TCW Facebook Page, Salum Gust can clearly be seen, likely right after Star Spangled Slammer, attacking Bobby Joe Black in the Parking lot. Yet another challenge has been issued, and it’s time for both men to call in their respective “lumberjacks” to hopefully ensure a fair fight. Despite being relative newcomers to the sport, both of these guys entertain the hell out of me, and my son absolutely loves rooting for Bobby Joe whenever he can. This match is going to be amazing, and I can’t wait to see what happens. Now that I think of it, I’m fairly certain that this is the first lumberjack match that I’ve ever seen live and in-person, so that should be pretty cool.

The Iceman VS Van Bam Winkle

It’s been a few months since TCW fans have seen The Iceman grace the halls of the National Guard Armory in Ottawa, Kansas, but he’s coming back and ready to kick some ICE (okay, no more Mr. Freeze puns, I promise). Way back in March, he fought in a losing effort against Rocco The Barbarian and Dekin Cane, and has likely been nursing his wounds ever since. I’m sure The Iceman is looking for a little bit of recognition and to help set the record straight. He’s going to be going up against Van Bam Winkle, who I’m pretty sure will be second guessing his trademark turtleneck sweater in the hot July heat! VBW is about equal parts full of himself and ruthless, and if he cuts back on his typical shenanigans he could score an upset. The Iceman is, however, a staple of Kansas City wrestling and a veteran of the craft, so nobody should take him lightly. I’m sure everyone in attendance is going to be ready for his trademark victory dance.

“The Suplex Cyclone” Curt Gannon VS “Miracle” Mike James

“Miracle” Mike James had a hell of a TCW debut last month (at least I’m pretty sure it was his debut, my apologies of not), helping Rocco the Barbarian secure a win in a very competitive tag team division. As a last minute replacement for Dekin Cane, James grabbed the bull by those proverbial horns and ran with it. I’m not sure if he’s going to be working with Dekin again here, but James seems like he may not even need the help. James obviously likes to play dirty, and a young inexperienced opponent might have trouble getting around after he gets through with someone. Just ask Oli Summers who came all the way from Texas just to get the taste slapped straight out of his mouth last month!

Unfortunately for James, his opponent for this match is anything but “typical” or unexperienced – he’s wrestling a human force of nature. “The Suplex Cyclone” Curt Gannon can pop a suplex off in pretty much any stance, during any move, and at any time. He’s a master of his craft and his craft is throwing guys on the top of their heads. All it will take is one small slip-up or one missed moment and James might be spending the night in the ICU. This ought to be an absolutely crazy match, and it just might steal the show this weekend!

“Astonishing” Austin Mulitalo VS “Madman” Max Sterling

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen “Astonishing” Austin Mulitalo in Trailblazer Championship Wrestling, and you better believe he has unfinished business with “Madman” Max Sterling. Wayyyy back in March, at Bunkhouse Brawl, Mulitalo lost a very competitive match against Sterling in which Sterling resorted to using a chain and getting help from his long-time associate, Salum Gust, to secure the bag. That isn’t new to Max’s matches, as fans have seen him either blatantly cheat or get himself disqualified if there is even the slightest inkling that the match isn’t going his way. Austin has got to be absolutely ready for that and come up with a contingency plan if he plans to get retribution, otherwise getting that second loss is going to sting even worse.

Mulitalo seems to be ready to redeem himself, HERE for video

If a recent video posted to the TCW Facebook page is any indication, Mulitalo seems ready to get in there and show Kansas wrestling fans what the future of Kansas and Missouri wrestling looks like. If he can navigate the perils of wrestling a certifiable lunatic and watch out for his buddies, he definitely has a chance. Emerald City Showdown is shaping up to be a rebuke of the way “Madman” Max Sterling has been acting, and it will be crazy to see what happens when the dust settles.

Moses “The Deliverer” VS Dr. Isin

Finally, fans are going to get a match between The University of Guadalajara Online’s most decorated graduate and a competitor that wrestles with the favor of the Almighty himself, Dr. Isin and Moses “The Deliverer”. Dr. Isin was at Bunkhouse Brawl, but only had a small stint in the Brawl itself, so I will be happy to see him fully lace those boots up this weekend. Moses, however, has been there more recently, and is an absolute treat whenever he wrestles. Both men have held gold in other companies like World League Wrestling and New Breed Wrestling, so this isn’t like some small fluff match. In many ways, this could be seen as a dream match between two current and former champions duking it out.

In Closing:

Trailblazer Championship Wrestling: Emerald City Showdown is shaping up to be a solid show packed with eight amazing matches. As with every show at The Ottawa National Guard Armory, priority seating is on a first come first-served basis, so get there early. Come join me on Saturday July 22nd and see what has been a genuinely entertaining family-friendly blast these past few months. Believe me, your entire family will absolutely love it!
