It’s almost that time yet again! Just under one week separates me from another drive into Eastern Kansas to attend the next exciting offering from Trailblazer Championship Wrestling. Luckily the flat tire I sustained last week has been repaired, and I should be ready to go! While I am not looking too forward to being out and about when the weather is supposed to be close to 100 degrees (especially not while waiting for the doors to open!), This is luckily an indoors show so there is that. Then again, I’m sure the action inside that National Guard armory is going to be hot for another reason or two. This will be an interesting show for me, largely because there are plenty of fresh faces on the card that I am not familiar with, something that creates a bit of uncertainty, though I know I will be pleasantly surprised.

For the purposes of this preview, I plan to take a look at every announced match on the card and talk about the ins-and-outs of ongoing feuds and explain why you should be just as hyped as I am. As with literally every wrestling show, “The card is subject to change”, so this may not end up being what goes down at all, but that’s why you should check back about a week after the show to see my review! You will be astonished at just how bad my pictures will be from an allegedly “good” cellphone, which I suppose I wouldn’t have any other way.

Remember that you should make it a goal to do stuff in the town you are visiting when doing these small town wrestling shows. I’ll have to find another local restaurant on the sponsor’s list and maybe get a chance to visit that elusive movie Memorabilia Museum we missed out on back in May. With any luck, there won’t be a graduation party going on inside and we can see what they have! If anyone else in Ottawa knows of anything cool to see/do, let me know!

The Card:

Luke Anthony VS Leland Race

I’ve mentioned in other reviews that I have been attending independent wrestling shows since 2007, and for a large portion of that first decade or so, it was almost exclusively with World League Wrestling out of Troy, Missouri, previously Eldon, Missouri. With that in mind, you can definitely say that I am familiar with “The Legacy” Leland Race and the sort of amazing matches he can deliver. Being trained by the “The Greatest Wrestler On God’s Green Earth”, Harley Race, means that Leland is not somebody to mess with. Luke Anthony is also someone that I first saw at a WLW show last year, and he did a hell of a job in Liberty, MO. At that time, he was beloved by the crowd, a large feat considering WLW was on tour and many had never seen him before. He even picked my son up after his win when he was giving him a high-five, which made my son’s night. I think I know who I’m rooting for! I’m not sure what the dynamic here will be exactly (For all I know Luke is a jerk now!), but this match has the potential to be a hell of a main event, and I am very excited to see what happens.

Rocco The Barbarian and Dekin Cane VS Ali Summers and Danny Drion

For months now, we’ve seen Rocco get the better of many foes, notably The Iceman back at Bunkhouse Brawl, largely because of a well-placed wrench to the back of somebody’s head via Dekin Cane. He almost took out “The Suplex Cyclone” Curt Gannon as well at Tornado Alley, but thankfully Gannon saw through the shenanigans. As you can see, Dekin Cane is in the mix for real this time, and I’m not sure what to expect. Not only will this be my first time seeing Ali Summers and Danny Drion, so I can’t vouch for their abilities, it will be the first time seeing Dekin compete.

Will Rocco be able to “bend the rules” here, as he has done with Dekin before, with Cane not leading from the shadows, or will this somehow energize their unlikely pairing? I’m not sure Rocco even understands what is happening aside from hurting people and getting riches from his conquests, so as long as the agreement between these two men remains fruitful, I’m sure we’ll keep seeing them work together. All eyes will definitely be on Ali Summers and Danny Drion, two men that could really solidify their spot on the roster if they can pull off an upset here.

“Madman” Max Sterling VS Shimbashi

Another name I am not familiar with is Shimbashi. He seems very well-regarded online, and especially is popular within the Texas wrestling scene. Shimbashi has his work cut out for him with drawing the proverbial “short straw” to be paired with the insufferable “Madman” Max Sterling at this show. Sterling has shown time and time again that he does not care about the money he could be making in wrestling if he did things “by the book”. He has got himself disqualified in the past simply because matches were not going his way, or somebody made him a bit too mad. To me, it seems that Sterling is wrestling because it allows him an opportunity to legally hurt and maim people, which should terrify a relatively young talent with many years in front of him like Shimbashi. This is especially worrying if Salum Gust is also a variable in the match, as the hulking behemoth of a man has been in a somewhat interesting working relationship with Sterling as of late. Here’s hoping Shimbashi can pull through and overcome the odds against him next Saturday.

Jared Thumb VS Alonzo Romero

Thumbs up for the new maestro of The Stunner, Jared Thumb, as he takes on New Mexico’s own, Alonzo Romero. Truthfully, I don’t believe I’ve seen Romero yet, but I’m pretty sure he’s been in TCW before, so I’m glad to finally get to see him. Thumb has been part of some pretty solid tag matches so far, so getting to see what he can do in a singles match will be a treat for me. This match could really go either way for me, and I love stuff like that because this could be a match that steals the show for all I know!

Bobby Jo Black VS Salum Gust in a body slam match

I spoke with Bobby Jo Black last week for insights on this match, and it seems like he has come to the same conclusions I had alluded to in my review of Tornado AlleySalum Gust was furious that he lost the Bunkhouse Brawl, and has seemingly devoted his short-term wrestling career to, as Bobby put it, “Twisting his head off”. Black rode on his win from that match for more than a month, it empowered him and gave him the confidence to rack up some more impressive wins all over the state. Gust, however, brooded and seethed, and let his emotions cloud his mind. Since then, Gust and Black have been butting heads all over the Midwest these past few months, and I’m not sure there’s any indication that’s about to stop.

At Tornado Alley, one would have thought that Gust would have been satisfied with his somewhat definitive win over Black, but was apparently more than happy to accept a challenge he likely feels will once again prove he is stronger. Bobby stated in the aforementioned interview: “The last match Salum and I had made me very upset with myself. Since then, I’ve been putting extra hard work in the gym and on the farm. So I’m not only confident I’ll lift Salum up and slam him down. I’m very confident.” Here’s hoping that Black gets his chance to prove his win over Gust wasn’t just some kind of opportunistic fluke, and in turn makes it out of Ottawa in one piece. If Black wins, I can only imagine the mindset Gust will be in, and it’s definitely not good. This is one of my feuds of the year so far, and I love seeing these guys fight.

In Closing:

Trailblazer Championship Wrestling: Star Spangled Slammer is shaping up to be a solid show with a lot of surprises for me. I love seeing “new guys”, and this definitely has a number of wrestlers I will be excited to see for the first time. Tickets are $15.00 for adults, and just $10.00 for kids with priority seating on a first come first-served basis. While it’s yet another crowded day for live professional wrestling in the area, come join me over in Ottawa, Kansas Saturday June 24th, and see what has been a genuinely entertaining family-friendly blast these past few months. Believe me, kids will love it!
