Jose Mourinho has become the latest high-profile figure from football to find himself the subject of an investigation by the Spanish tax office, with the allegation that he evaded €3.3 million (£2.9 million) between 2011 and 2012.
Mr Mourinho has been accused by prosecutors of defrauding Spain of €3.3m (£2.9m; $3.6m) in taxes while he was Real Madrid coach from 2011 to 2012.
A prosecutor said Mr Mourinho, 54, did not declare income from image rights in order to get an “illicit benefit”.
The Manchester United manager, who is on holiday, follows Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Neymar, Radamel Falcao, Javier Mascherano and Ángel Di María as players and coaches who have worked in Spain and found themselves under investigation or prosecuted.
Prosecutors said he had failed to declare revenues from his image rights in his Spanish income tax declarations from 2011 and 2012, “with the aim of obtaining illicit profits”.
They said Mourinho had already settled a previous claim relating to his Spanish taxes, which resulted in a penalty of €1.15m in 2014.
But tax authorities later found that some of the information presented in that settlement was incorrect, the prosecutors said.
Real Madrid was not immediately available for comment on the allegations against Mourihno or Ronaldo’s hearing.
Mourinho was manager of Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013 before he returned to the Premier League for his second spell in charge of Chelsea. The exact amounts that he is accused of evading under the documents from the Madrid prosecutor’s office are €1,611,537 in 2011 and €1,693,133 in 2012.
