Sonic and Tails are off on an intelligence gathering mission, boarding a flying battleship in an attempt to answer the big mystery of the series so far and discover who’s behind this latest string of badnik attacks.
The clues given to the readers up til now looked to be all for naught after the final page reveal of issue six. That reveal from the last issue doesn't last long, however, as soon as Sonic boards the ship the evil Dr. Eggman is revealed to be Neo Metal Sonic, after two pages of catchup to get all the new readers up to speed the two rush headlong into an exhilarating battle.
Whether it's the exaggerated design of Neo Metal Sonic, the heavy use of speed lines or the high contrast white background that dominates a lot of the panels during this extended battle Adam Bryce Thomas brings a strong manga feel to this whole sequence. It’s a striking, kinetic approach that manages to turn what is essentially padding into an engaging action sequence.
Neither side manages to score the upper hand or advance their individual plans and eventually Sonic decides he’s going to have to take the loss on this one, he beats a hasty retreat and back at HQ delivers the bad news to the rest of the gang. Not only are they up against Neo Metal Sonic but Sonic failed to gather any kind of intelligence on the enemy plan during his time on the battleship.
Bits and Pieces:
The plot as ever moves forward in inches but the art team continues to entertain and delight.
