Intel To Develop First 64-Bit Quad Core ARM Chip

Intel is reportedly set to make the world’s first Quad Core 64-bit ARM processor. According to reports, chip maker Altera, on 29 October, announced that it will be developing the Stratix 10 system-on-chip, which will be a high performance quad core 64-bit ARM Cortex A53 processor. Further, Intel will reportedly be developing this processor for Altera, through the 14-nanometer manufacturing process. This is Intel’s most advanced manufacturing process.

You might be confused as to why Intel is being called the first, when Apple has already launched it’s A7 processor, which is also based on a 64-bit architecture and ARM design. Well, Apple’s chip, as you may or may not know, is a dual-core processor, while Intel is working on a quad core version. Samsung has also been reportedly working on a 64-bit processor for its mobile devices. The Samsung chip is expected to be seen in the Samsung Galaxy S5 in January 2014.

In response to a query by CNET, Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy confirmed the information, saying, “Altera and Intel are pleased with the early results of the relationship between the companies and this announcement from Altera is consistent with the agreement we announced earlier this year. We have said that we will be open to manufacturing competitive architectures and would evaluate them on a case by case basis.”
