*The Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) Music Maker Dinner, hosted by legendary producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, set the stage for a star-studded evening in LA on January 31, 2024.
The event, dedicated to supporting the economic empowerment of Black music entrepreneurs, artists, producers, and songwriters, brought together industry leaders and celebrated artists in a show of unity and support.
Among the stars in attendance were Victoria Monét, Jermaine Dupri, Babyface, Muni Long, Flavor Flav, Teedra Moses, Mondaii, Kenny Burns, and other Black music industry power players.
The evening commenced with Willie “Prophet” Stiggers, BMAC Co-Founder and CEO, delivering opening remarks that emphasized the importance of paying it forward and guiding the next generation.
“This is not a conversation that we’re just here to have, but it’s actually a moment that we need all of you to join us in to make a true movement,” said Prophet.
A highlight of the event was the announcement of the 2024 BMAC x ASCAP x Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis Music Maker Grant winners: Mikaili Ector and Zaire Porter. This annual award provides aspiring Black producers and songwriters with funding, studio time, and mentorship from the Grammy Award-winning duo. It was established in celebration of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2023.
Adding to the evening’s significance, 10-time Grammy nominee Victoria Monét introduced the BMAC x Victoria Monét Music Maker Grant, offering a Black emerging music artist $5,000 for economic empowerment, along with mentorship opportunities and career advice.
“When you give, the feeling lasts longer than the gift itself,” said Monét when speaking about the importance of giving back to the next generation of Black music artists.
The event had musical moments as well, with Babyface, Flavor Flav, Tank, and Kenny Burns teaming up for an unexpected performance of Babyface’s “Whip Appeal.” Tank led a sing-along featuring a catalog of hits by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and there was a tribute to the legendary producers by 1500 or Nothin’ and friends. Jermaine Dupri took over the DJ booth, spinning his major hits and other classics, keeping the crowd dancing throughout the night.
