‘Gospel’ Docu-Series Kicks Off With A Gospel Concert | WATCH

*Imagine a packed church house vibing to an incredible church band, hand-waving, and dancing from parishioners to some of their favorite gospel songs. That’s “GOSPEL.”

Viewers can look forward to it on February 9, as the kickoff concert begins. It is the accompanying concert to ‘GOSPEL, a four-hour docu-series that probes the history of Black spirituality and its direct connection to gospel music utilizing sermons and songs from executive producer, host, and writer Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

We live in times when younger generations are leaving the church. The emergence of televised docu-series such as ‘GOSPEL’ can be a breath of fresh air.

Sabrina Owens and Brenda Franklin Corbett – GOSPEL, a new four-hour docuseries that explores the rich history of Black spirituality through sermon and song from executive producer, host, and writer Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., premieres in February 12 and 13, 2024 on PBS, PBS.org and the PBS App.

The series producers and directors Shayla Harris and Stacey L. Holman joined EUR for a conversation about their experience and what they hope the audience will take away from it.

“It’s been a wonderful journey. Shayla and I go way back to the Black church with Skip, so this is just kind of, you know, the next natural story to tell since we only had four hours to talk about the institution. This was just an opportunity to really delve into some of the heroes and heroines of gospel and also preaching,” Holman shared.

Tyrell Bell and the Belle Singers – GOSPEL, a new four-hour docuseries that explores the rich history of Black spirituality through sermon and song from executive producer, host, and writer Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., premieres on February 12 and 13, 2024 on PBS, PBS.org and the PBS App.

“It’s always an honor and a privilege to tell these stories. Especially on PBS and with someone as esteemed as Professor Gates. Obviously working with Stacey is really, really great. To work on this particular one, which I think is both intellectually interesting, but also emotionally interesting. I think there’s something really beautiful about gospel, preaching, and that sound that emerged out of the Black church, that we were able to do some really cool, creative things in this series,” added Harris.

All styles of music has evolved, but the consistency of the sound of gospel has remained true. It epitomizes strength, triumph, and faith for its widespread, global audience.

Dionne Warwick – GOSPEL, a new four-hour docuseries that explores the rich history of Black spirituality through sermon and song from executive producer, host, and writer Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., premieres in February 12 and 13, 2024 on PBS, PBS.org and the PBS App.

Premiering on February 12 and 13 on PBS, ‘GOSPEL’ with feature interviews with notable names such as Dionne Warwick, U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock, Rev. Otis Moss III, and professor Michael Eric Dyson. The series will feature musical performances of “Can’t Nobody Do Me Like Jesus,” “Total Praise,” and more.

Watch the full interview, and make sure to tune into PBS, PBS.org or PBS the app to watch ‘GOSPEL’.
