*(Los Angeles) – Indie filmmaking power couple Roxanne and Deon Taylor‘s Hidden Empire Films, in association with the African American Film Critics Association, is delighted to announce a special Halloween screening commemorating the 50th anniversary of the horror movie classic, “Blacula.”

The spine-tingling evening will feature the film shown in its original 35 mm format, a post-reception, and other bone-chilling surprises, all set to take place on October 24th at the historic Fine Arts Theater in Beverly Hills. This event will mark the commencement of a revival for the iconic 1972 vampire classic as the prolific couple reimagines it for a highly anticipated 2024 Halloween release.

“Blacula,” released during the height of the Blaxploitation movement of the 1970s, pioneered greater diversity in characters and storytelling within the horror genre, leaving an indelible mark on cinematic history.

Its success resonated widely, inspiring a sequel, “Scream Blacula Scream.” A wave of other influential Blaxploitation horror films followed, among them “Blackenstein” and “Dr. Black, Mr. Hyde.”

“We are creating an evening that transcends time as we bring together prestigious filmmakers and trailblazers to pay homage to this iconic classic,” said Deon Taylor. “‘Blacula’ was a celebration of storytelling that influenced Blaxploitation filmmaking.

The film’s legacy has echoed through the years with contemporary films like ‘Blade’ and ‘Morbius.’ As a filmmaker, it’s a privilege to have the rich experience of bringing the film back to life. On Halloween, we are going to uplift and celebrate the film for the impact it left on the cinematic landscape.”

For the Taylors, who have successfully built Hidden Empire Films into one of the most prominent Black independent film companies globally, shining the spotlight on culturally significant titles like “Blacula” aligns with their mission.

AAFCA founder Gil Robertson commended their efforts: “As Black producers, directors, and creatives, Deon and Roxanne have consistently demonstrated a winning formula for making films that create significant platforms for relevant contemporary issues, especially those that impact Black communities. I am not surprised that they are celebrating ‘Blacula’ and expect that it will resonate with as much cultural significance as the original. It’s going to be a fun night.”
