*Imitation is often the sincerest form of flattery. But a Kenyan man, Brian Mwenda, took it a step further, collecting 26 wins in the High Court. The catch is Mwenda is accused of impersonating a lawyer with the same name.

Citing a tweet from Facts East Africa, Sandra Rose reports Mwenda’s story has gone viral, with Kenyan police stating he started practicing law without a license after stealing the real Mwenda’s identity.

The fake Mwenda argued 26 cases before Kenya’s High Court and Court of Appeals and won all of them. Despite the victories, the imposter caught the attention of judges and magistrates, who checked more into him and his history, only to find the imitator was not licensed to practice law. Sandra Rose notes the fake Mwenda reportedly accessed the Law Society of Kenya’s website and tried to apply for a license under the stolen identity.

“He argued 26 cases before High Court Judges, Magistrates, and Court of Appeal Judges. He won all 26 of the cases,” Facts East Africa tweeted about the fake lawyer situation.

As for the real Mwenda, it turns out he worked in the Attorney General’s office, which Citizen TV Kenza mentioned was the reason he did not have a license to practice law, adding that Mwenda did not apply for a license.

“We can confirm that we do not have an advocate by the masquerader Brian Mwenda,” Eric Theuri, the president of the Law Society of Kenya told Citizen TV Kenya as he revealed the imitator’s full name. “What we have is another advocate by the name Brian Mwenda Twega who was admitted in 2022 but had not taken out a practicing certificate.”

At this time, the fake Mwenda is still on the run from the law. The Law Society of Kenya has made it known that it wants the imposter caught and arrested for impersonating a lawyer.
