*Retired Harvard professor Dr. Cornel West has entered the 2024 presidential race, running with the People’s Party.

“I have decided to run for truth and justice, which takes the form of running for president of the United States as a candidate for the People’s Party,” West said in a video posted to Twitter on Monday. “I enter for the quest for truth. I enter for the quest of justice. And the presidency is just one vehicle we pursue that truth and justice.”

The political activist said he is “Fighting to end poverty, mass incarceration,” as well as “wars and ecological collapse” and providing “housing, health care, education and living wages for all!”

On Twitter, several of West’s followers have mixed reactions to his Presidential Bid, with one user writing “Love you Dr. West, but with all due respect, the Green Party is RIGHT THERE and needs a good candidate such as yourself to get to 5%. Running with the People’s Party is unserious and beneath you.”

Another said, “As much as West attacked Obama, I hope that he learns 2 things from this campaign,” the person wrote, adding: “1. It ain’t as easy as Obama makes it look” and “2. U can’t please everybody.”

A third user noted that West “will siphon away black votes from Joe Biden.”

“Maybe this is the catalyst for integrity in politics. I hope so,” commented one Twitter user, while another added, “I would vote for you over Biden.”

Several users seem to think West’s skills would be best served to support another candidate.

“love your work Dr west & pleading with you don’t run. Rather help widen democrats’ coalition. national elections need to be viewed through a lens of harm reduction. Vital to keep republicans out of power. Yes, let’s change system, build movement, run local. Biden has to win,” wrote Twitter user Mark GLovan.

In his announcement, West said “I come from a tradition where I care about you. I care about the quality of your life. I care about whether you have access to a job or a living wage, decent housing, women having control over their bodies, healthcare for all, the escalating destruction of the planet, the destruction of American democracy.”

He added, “Democracy creates disruption, it creates and eruption, it creates and interruption. Why? From below, the energies of everyday people is manifest, and I know there are precious people in your life who you care for. That’s why it is important for you to be involved, important for you to participate.”

The People’s Party was founded by former Bernie Sanders campaign staffer Nick Brana and aims to build “guarantee health care, housing, quality education, and peace to all.”
