*A Soldier’s Play has been revived at The Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, presented by The Center Theatre Group, The Roundabout Theatre Company and Tamar Climan.

For audiences who are new to this work by Charles Fuller, congratulations you’ve been introduced to the 1983 Pulitzer Prize drama, a staple in Black theatre and a gem in American Theatre. For familiar audiences, there are lingering echoes from the riveting performances of the late Adolph Ceasar as Sergeant Vernon C. Waters, as well as other original cast members Samuel L. Jackson, Denzel Washington and the late Larry Riley. Their essence is not spoken of, but it’s in the air. Yeah, you’ve got expectations. Will they be met or exceeded?

We are pleased to report that the cast of A Soldier’s Play at The Ahmanson theatre knocks it out of the ballpark.  The cast is led by TV, film and Broadway legend Norm Lewis as the mystifying, investigative Captain Richard Davenport. The story is set at a military base in Fort Neal, Louisiana in 1944. A murder occurs. It appears to be an open and shut case that is tinged by the typical racism of the day. Nothing could be farther from the truth. These characters draw you in to a story that has the audience hanging on every word.

Eugene Lee is absolutely riveting as Sergeant Version C. Waters and Tarik Love is entirely captivating as Private First Class Melvin Peterson. Director Kenny Leon understood the assignment and his cast delivers a flawless performance from start to finish. They hit the mark on every cadence of conflict, drama, literary verve and theatrical brilliance.

A Soldier’s Play also stars Will Adams, Brandon Alvión, Sheldon D. Brown, Malik Esoj Childs, Ja Quán Cole, William Connell, Charles Everett, Alex Michael Givens, Matthew Goodrich, Chattan Mayes Johnson, Branden Davon Lindsay, Al ‘Jaleel McGhee, Howard W.
