*Students across Florida will receive new social studies textbooks, but they will not contain recent social issues as part of Gov. Ron DeSantis overhaul of the state’s school system.

Due to new laws passed in Florida about what can be taught in the classroom, subjects on the Black Lives Matter movement, CRT (critical race theory), George Floyd, and other social injustice rallies around the country have been removed from social studies textbooks, WPTV reports. This is a routine adoption process that happens every few years, however this year, the governor wants to cut diversity and equity funding and limit faculty tenure protections.

“It’s our view that, when the taxpayers are funding these institutions, that we as Floridians and we as taxpayers have every right to insist that they are following a mission that is consistent with the best interest of our people in our state,” DeSantis said Monday during his visit to New College of Florida to sign legislation imposing new restrictions on what can be taught and said at the state’s colleges and universities.

“I just see it as an attempt to hide the truth and discount the contributions of Black Americans to the U.S.,” said Robert Mitchell, the founder of Muck City Black Lives Matter in the Glades, per WPTV.

“It makes common sense in your textbooks that you would be told, hey, there was a movement called Black Lives Matter,” Mitchell said. “The reason why, there was young men and women being slain and killed unjustifiably.”

During his visit to New College, Gov. DeSantis was met by protesters who criticized his efforts to restrict lessons about race and gender as part of the state’s so-called “Stop WOKE” act. The interim president of New College plans to establish a core curriculum that connects liberal arts to technology, according to Florida Politics.

As USA Today reports, the legislation signed by DeSantis Monday requires university officials to review any lessons “based on theories that systemic racism, sexism and privilege are inherent in the institutions of the United States and were created to maintain social, political and economic inequities.”
