DMZ North and South Korea's Demilitarized Zone is 2 and half miles wide, 150 miles long. It was established in the 1953 truce that ended the Korean War and is one of the most Heavily Guarded Borders in the world. About 700 U.S. and Korean soldiers are stationed at the Joint Security Area, a buffer zone inside the truce village of Panmunjom.

4 North Korean soldiers have defected this year. 5 of the 6 most recent U.S. presidents have visited the SMZ. President Clinton called it 'the scariest place on earth.' Trump's 2017 visit was cancelled because of bad weather. A United Nations conference room straddles the military border. There is also a gift shop.
