400 Whales Wash Up On New Zealand Beach

New Zealanders are racing to rescue these Whales. Hundreds of volunteers flock to Golden Bay to save scores of pilot whales, while taking turns pouring water over them to try and keep them cool. It's 1 of the country's largest recorded mass whale strandings.

Some 300 whales have already died . The precise cause of the stranding is not known, through beached whales aren't an uncommon sight at Golden Bay. It's shallow muddy waters confuse the marine mammals sonar leaving them at risk of being stranded on the shore.
