Don’t Give Up

I remember when I first started Running, I was always unmotivated if I didn’t go a certain distance without taking a walk break. This went on for several years.

It wasn’t until I read some articles from Runner’s World that I discovered that walking during your runs is absolutely ok. There are training sessions that are called RW’s which stands for Run/Walk sessions. A great way to start this session is by running fast for two minutes, jogging for two minutes, running again, then jogging and after that, a short walk is acceptable during your run. People burn more calories this way as well.

For anyone to be discouraged by this, just realize that we are not meant to train hard all of the time. It is appropriate to listen to the wants and needs of our bodies. If we don’t then we will more than likely be proned to injury.

A light cardio day doesn’t hurt every once in a while. If you work out at a gym, give your knees a break and use the elliptical. I like to switch off and do other exercises to give my legs a small break. Some days, I will do some rounds of jump-rope.

When jump-roping, you can go steady for a minute (beginners) and then Rest for a minute. For those who are more advanced and have better stamina, do three minutes on and one minute of rest. I usually do this maybe five times or more. This is an exercise that boxers do in order to prepare for a match.

Another exercise that you can alternate into your cardio routine, to keep from boredom or injury, is using the step ladder. All of these exercises target different areas and make for a better workout.

There are plenty more out there such as the bike or reducing the rest time during a strength training day. This will help you stay motivated and I hope now you feel less discouraged about taking a walking breather during your run.

Stay active my friends!
