Earth Day 2021 is coming up on Thursday, April 22nd. If you are wondering “What can I do for Earth Day”, we have you covered. Luckily there are a number of fun, insightful events in the Boston area that will allow you to mark Earth Day by celebrating the beauty of our planet and understanding the ecosystems that have made it their home.

How to celebrate Earth Day 2021 in and around Boston

Earth Day Festival

Join us for a family-friendly Earth Day celebration at the Boston Nature Center! Together we’ll create environmentally friendly gardening take-home projects, design land art, and learn about how we can advocate for the environment. Explore the trails during a self-guided story book walk and enjoy being outside with friends and family.

Rivers and Migrating Fish

Help wildlife, help the environment, help scientists and know more about cute River herring. Every year, river herring swim from the harbor up rivers to lay eggs in fresh water. This amazing wildlife story is largely invisible. Join us and discover the remarkable ecological success story of river herring on the Mystic River. Find out about river herring lifecycle, the Mystic River, and hear from scientists studying the fish. YOU can be involved in gathering data through our web-based community science project.

Earth Day Celebration at Cambridge Public Library

We invite children of all ages and their grownups to join us from home for songs and stories to celebrate Earth Day, along with an introduction to kitchen scrap gardening If you would like to participate in the hands-on activity, please have on hand the following. However, this is not required for participation in the program Kitchen scraps End of a head of lettuce, carrot stick, celery in a bunch, tomato slice, bell pepper, squash, Bowl, Water, Small/medium pot for planting, or outdoor garden space, Potting soil.

Earth Day Youth Art Contest

Join the Museum of Science in celebrating Earth Day, April 22, 2021!

Now through Saturday, April 17th, we are accepting 2-D digital art entries from K–12 students for our Earth Day Youth Art Contest

Where: 1 Science Park Boston, MA 02114

When: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Audience: Recommended for: Grades K – 12 and adults

Earth Day Workshop

This Earth Day we are celebrating all of the creatures of the air! There are so many amazing animals that call the sky their home, like songbirds and chickadees, blue jays and cardinals, and red-tailed hawks and owls. In this workshop, we will make kites painted with the designs of your favorite bird. We will learn about how to make a flying kite using air mechanics and will also learn about how birds travel through the air.

Location: The Umbrella Arts Center

Age range: Kids and families Students min/max: 10

Alewife Reservation Earth Day Cleanup

Alewife Reservation, one of the largest urban wilds in metro-Boston, is home to dozens of species of birds, deer, coyotes, muskrats, turtles, and more. After a year of limited cleanups, this sanctuary needs many helping hands to remove trash and debris that have accumulated over the fall and winter.

Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup

The Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup builds on a national effort as part of American Rivers’ National River Cleanup®, which to date, has removed over 25 million pounds of trash from America’s waterways. From 2016 to 2019, the Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup was recognized by American Rivers for the Most Pounds of Trash Collected and Most Volunteers Mobilized.

Earth Day Neighborhood & Trail Clean-Up Event

The Town of Andover’s Department of Public Works (DPW) in conjunction with Republic Services is hosting a Neighborhood & Trail Clean-Up Day in honor of Earth Day! The DPW will provide trash bags and gloves and Republic Services will provide the disposal of all trash collected from this event.

Earth Day 2021: Nature Walks

On a tour of this beautiful property where trails narrow to squeeze between rock outcroppings and glacial erratics punctuate the woodlands. North Brook rattles and gurgles beside the trail as it slips under a flat slab of rock.

Weeklong celebration of Earth Day

Food Explorers Program

How do a few tiny seeds become the fruits and vegetables we love to eat? What do birds, butterflies, and bees have to do with our favorite foods? And how can the scraps from our plates help us grow more food? Find out the answers to these questions and more during Food Explorers, the Abbot Public Library’s newest STEM program for kids! Follow your food as it goes from seed to compost and farm to table. Each session will include stories and activities, as well as a take-home craft or simple science experiment to help us explore and connect to the food we eat.
