Philadelphia Councilmember Kenyatta Johnson has introduced a resolution honoring the life and legacy of Rakim “PnB Rock” Allen. Johnson told The Philadelphia Inquirer that he used his platform to advocate against gun violence throughout the city. Specifically, Johnson highlighted PnB Rock’s track, “My City Needs Something,” as a powerful tool that highlights violence in the city’s most underserved communities.

“He definitely represented a generation of young people that need help when it comes to issues of trauma around gun violence, when it comes to the issue of providing them opportunities, but most importantly, making sure they have a voice and a seat at the table,” Johnson told the local outlet.

“He could have just said ‘You know what, I’m just gonna focus on making money.’ He still focused on particularly trying to save our young people and give them a sense of direction and, most importantly, hope in the midst of all of the gun violence that we’re seeing here in the city of Philadelphia.”

Tragically, PnB Rock was killed due to the violence he advocated against on the track that Johnson highlighted. Earlier this month, he traveled out to Los Angeles, California with his girlfriend. While in the city, he stopped at Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles in South Los Angeles. At the restaurant, an unidentified individual walked into the restaurant and demanded that the singer give up his personal belongings. As the robbery attempt unfolded, PnB Rock was shot and later pronounced dead. He was laid to rest in Philadelphia earlier this week.

As of the publishing of this report, no suspects have been formally charged with his death.
