Shakur Stevenson Teases Move To Lightweight Following Homecoming Fight

The Lightweight division is the glamour division in boxing at the moment. Earlier this year, Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano sold out Madison Square Garden as they fought for the women’s undisputed lightweight title. Weeks later, lightweight contender Gervonta Davis stopped Rolando “Rolly” Romero in the sixth round at the Barclays Center as Madonna watched from ringside. More recently, Michael B. Jordan and Draymond Green came out to see Ryan Garcia Fight Javier Fortuna in Los Angeles, California. Not to mention, a fight between Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia may be in the works for early next year while Alycia Baumgardner and Mikaela Mayer fight for an opportunity to challenge Katie Taylor for her undisputed title. With all of that going on, a new name may emerge in the division.

Shakur Stevenson is set to defend WBC and WBO 130-pound championships against Robson Conceição on September 23, 2022 in his hometown of Newark, New Jersey. If Stevenson is able to get by Conceição, he will look to fight Joe Cordina or Roger Gutierrez for the remaining pieces of the 130-pound title. In the event that those fights cannot be secured, the New Jersey native is not opposed to moving into the lightweight division.

“We’ve got to see,” he told Boxing Scene.

“It’s all up in the air right now. It’s all depending on how I’m feeling. Going up to 135 is not out the way and staying at 130 is not out the way. It’s all depending on what I feel and how I feel after this fight.”

Stevenson is currently signed to Top Rank. As a result, potential fights with Devin Haney and Vasiliy Lomachenko remain possibilities.
