Tragic news from the NFL broke Saturday morning with the news that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins was struck by a car and passed away at age 24. The former Ohio State Buckeyes standout quarterback was a starter for the Washington Commanders before serving as the backup to Ben Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh for a year. He was expected to compete for the starting role this year with Mitchell Trubisky and Mason Rudolph. There are limited details about what happened outside of it happening in South Florida. He was down there working out and preparing for the NFL season.

In a statement about the tragedy, Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin had the following to say: “I am devastated and at a loss for words with the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins. He quickly became part of our Steelers family upon his arrival in Pittsburgh and was one of our hardest workers, both on the field and in our community. Dwayne was a great teammate, but even more so a tremendous friend to so many. I am truly heartbroken.

Death, especially this young, is a tragedy. Players and coaches that knew him were quick to offer their condolences and mourn the loss of a colleague and friend. This is truly devastating news for the NFL community. He would have turned 25 on May Third. We here at Def Pen Sports offer our thoughts to Dwayne Haskins’ friends and family.
