Tishaura Jones has been elected as the next mayor of the city of St. Louis. Jones beat out Alderwoman Cara Spencer by earning 52% of the popular vote. With this victory, she also becomes the first Black woman to serve as mayor of the city.

“As a city, we’ve been surviving,” she said after her historic victory.

“It’s time for St. Louis to thrive. It’s time to bring a breath of fresh air to our neighborhoods.”

This is the second time that Jones has run for mayor. In 2017, she lost a Democratic primary to current Mayor Lyda Krewson by less than 1,000 votes.

“That loss was something that happened in my life to prepare me for this moment,” she told St. Louis Public Radio.

“This feels amazing. I’m ready to get to work and usher in St. Louis’ new era.”

Having climbed the mountain on her second try, Jones earned praise from politicians around the state.

“It’s a new day in St. Louis, and Black women are leading the way,” U.S. Rep. Cori Bush tweeted.

“Congratulations to our next mayor, Tishaura Jones. Throughout her career, Tishaura has been a strong leader with a deep personal commitment to the people of St. Louis,” St. Louis Comptroller Darlene Greene added.
