Indiana fires Archie Miller after four seasons

The Archie Miller era is coming to an end in Bloomington. Trevor Ruszkowski/USA TODAY Sports

First reported by Jeff Goodman Monday morning, Indiana has fired Archie Miller. After four mediocre to bad seasons in Bloomington, the two parties have decided to part ways. This comes after Indiana failed to make the NCAA Tournament for the third year out of four. Their last tournament appearance came under coach Tom Crean in 2016 led by Victor Oladipo and company. Miller’s best postseason run came in 2019 when he took IU to the NIT Quarterfinals.

This is a big move for the Hoosiers. Miller has a $10 million buyout on his contract. There has been a multitude of names that come up as replacements, but it is still very early on in the process. While Indiana fans hope to return to the glory days of Bob Knight, recent history has not been kind to their program. Despite the level of recruiting success the last two coaches, Crean and Miller had, it seemed to just never work out.

The Romeo Langford recruitment was the highlight of the Miller era at IU. The 2019 first-round pick was seen as the one to turn things around. Langford did not participate in the 2019 postseason with Indiana. In-state recruiting has been better under Miller overall, but it just never equated to a winning product on the court. Miller was unable to replicate his success from Dayton. He had a record of 67-58 overall and 33-44 in the conference.

The most exciting prospect to replace Miller in my opinion is Iona’s, Rick Pitino. Having Pitino thrown into the Kentucky-Indiana-Louisville drama can only be good for college basketball.
