The Texas Tech Red Raiders have landed their first-ever recruit that’s ranked as a five-star. Nimari Burnett has committed to the Red Raiders over the Alabama Crimson Tide. This comes just one year after Chris Beard landed his highest-rated recruit ever in Jahmius Ramsey. The commitment of Burnett is a clear sign that the Red Raiders and Chris Beard are building a powerhouse.

The 2020 five-star combo guard will play his college basketball for Chris Beard and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Beard has been taking the Big 12 and NCAA by storm at Texas Tech. Burnett is ranked as the 22nd best prospect in the recruiting class of 2020. It is very possible that fans see him and Ramsey play alongside each other for more than one year. This also comes just one year after the Red Raiders lost the National Championship game to the Virginia Cavaliers.

The combo guard is listed at 6’3″ and 185 pounds. The Chicago prospect is headed down south to play for a program quickly on the rise. It seemed to be only a matter of time before the program landed its first five-star recruit. Nimari Burnett seemed to be tracking toward Alabama, but last-minute picked up a lot of Texas Tech momentum.

This is massive news for the Red Raiders and the Big 12 as a whole. Chris Beard is building a program that seems to want to challenge the long-time stranglehold by the Kansas Jayhawks. Bill Self and those very same Jayhawks landed their own five-star combo guard just before this news broke. The battles between Burnett and Bryce Thompson could be legendary even if they only happen two or three times. The Big 12 seems to be well on its way to a serious power struggle and great new rivalry.
