Netflix Betting on Talk Shows With Hasan Minhaj

Netflix is doubling down on its talk show programming. After flops with veterans such as Chelsea Handler and Joel McHale, the streaming giant is betting on Hasan Minhaj’s Patriot Act. The show’s huge 32 episode order will carry the series right into the 2020 election.

Minhaj broke onto the scene with his material at the 2017 White House Correspondent Dinner before releasing his critically acclaimed stand-up special Homecoming King. He was also Jon Stewart’s last hire on The Daily Show and gives his former boss credit for Patriot Act. “I asked Jon why he was leaving and he said, ‘I’ve manipulated this chess piece in every direction that I could over the past 17 years. It’s time to pass that torch on to other performers and see what they can do with it,'” said Minhaj. Minhaj is looking to do his own thing with the chess piece.

He is throwing out everything most people know about the late-night talk show formula. Instead of a desk and soundstage with a city skyline in the background, Minhaj is instead opting for a large stage and huge screens. Patriot Act will be a “visual podcast” meets “one-man show” and according to Minhaj, each episode will “feel like a stand-alone miniseries that’s Trojan-horsed into a weekly show.”

Patriot Act will premiere on Netflix on October 28.
