Kurhn x Forbidden City

In 2020, Beijing’s Forbidden City celebrated its 600th anniversary. Commissioned in 1406, the 178 acre imperial palace had its first official occupant in 1420. For 492 years until 1912, it housed 24 emperors from the Ming and Qing dynasty’s. Known for having some of the most well preserved ancient wooden structures, the grounds are currently open to the public as a museum of dynastic art and history. In honor of the anniversary, Kurhn has teamed up with the Forbidden City for a line of exclusive Dolls.

It’s dubbed “I Like the World of the Palace”. The line features dolls that celebrate dynastic history through beautiful costumes, elaborate hair and expressive faces. A number of the dolls from this series have also found their way to the company’s official AliExpress store, which is where I snagged a few adorable dolls from this collection for myself.

Spring Princess Dolls May and Ying

First, I want to go over as many of the dolls as I can find in this range, just in case you’re looking to add one to your collection. I am kicking myself for not picking up the winter Princess produced in this duo of Chinese Princess dolls. These dolls are 28cm and on articulated bodies.

Spring Princess Ying

From the photos, it’s clear their outfits have more details than non-exclusive doll and that there was lots of care put into crafting their faces. I love the two tone lipstick these girls have and the burnt orange tones in their outfits.

The dark brunette, Winter Princess May, is my favorite of the two, but the light brunette, Spring Princess Ying, has such a pretty outfit. These are worth looking at if you’re thinking of adding to your Kurhn collection. Don’t be me, who regrets not picking one up!

Rabbit Princess Kurhn

Now, let’s go into the dolls that I picked up. The Rabbit Princess was part of our latest Kurhn order from AliExpress. She’s 45cm tall and on an articulated body. While part of this line and exclusive to the Forbidden City, she’s more of a playline doll than others in her size range. More like a BJD, the Rabbit Princess has a head cap that allows you to change out her eyes. Unfortunately, her hair is permanent. The dolls hair is rooted onto the head cap. You’d have to cut it down if you wanted to change her hair. That being said, her white and light teal hair is cute.

Like the smaller dolls, the Rabbit Princess is wearing a traditional Chinese outfit. It’s very flowy, made of white fabric with light green accents. She comes with a white rabbit pendant. Truly, this doll is a great size and isn’t badly priced if you’re looking for an articulated doll to dress up or customize.

Limited Edition Chinese Princess

And finally, we’re at the grand finale of this post– the Limited Edition Chinese Princess doll. The most ambisious release in Kurhn’s Forbidden City series. Now, a quick note, the dolls above could also be limited, but this doll we’re talking about next is numbered. I have number 72 out of 600. Like the others, this doll is exclusive to the Forbidden City and there’s a good chance she’ll be hard to find in the United States or online, as she’s now sold out on AliExpress.

Ta-da! Look how gorgeous she is! The Chinese Princess Kurhn doll is 45cm tall, making her about the size of a traditional MSD doll. She’s plastic on an articulated body. It’s most likely the same body as the Rabbit Princess. However, the quality from there is vastly different.

Montage of Rivers and Mountains by Wang Ximeng

This large scale Kurhn doll is themed around the famous painting “A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains”. Seen on display at the Palace Museum, it shows a delicately painted landscape using golden yellows, rich blues and earthy greens. The inspiration can clearly be seen in the dolls design.

Standout Elements

Where the Rabbit Princess had a pretty standard playline dress, this high end collectable doll has a stunning Chinese hanfu, or gown. There are there layers to the skirt, all different, adding so much depth to the skirt.

Her sash is beautifully embroidered with mountains and rivers to match the watercolor landscapes in her skirt. The Chinese princess comes with matching shoes and a delicate fan that blends perfectly with her dress. Finally, she comes with a bright red cape. It is very well made. Kurhn put thought into this limited edition doll.

The dolls outfit has many different pieces so you can change her look if you’d like, going all the way down to a simpler yellow dress with red accents, if you’d like.

Unlike the Rabbit Princess, this 45cm doll your more traditional Kurhn face, just on a larger scale. She has painted eyes. Truthfully, I prefer those to the inset eyes. I love the Kurhn eyes on this scale. They’re so pretty. I also like the added gloss to the lips and eyes. The face is very simple, so they could have gone a bit further with it, but even as is, she’s a stunner!

As usual, Kurhn did an amazing job with this dolls rooted hair. They have the ability to create such delicate hair styles that are actually proportionate to the dolls head. Woven into the braids are size appropriate hair accessories that look very pretty.

I love Kurhn Dolls!

I’m so glad I didn’t let the price of this doll steer me away from buying her! I’ll admit, she was a splurge. But the idea of having a Godzilla sized Kurhn doll standing among my other dolls was too exciting to resist. To add these to your collection, I recommend bookmarking the AliExpress store. You never know what you’ll find!
