Mattel’s Creatable World

Mattel unveiled a new Doll line earlier this week and it’s making headlines around the world. Their new Creatable World line features six 11″ customizable dolls. A doll line designed to keep labels out and invite everyone in, Creatable World dolls are priced at $29.99. Each deluxe customizable character kit comes with a customizable articulated doll, six mix and match clothing pieces representing all genders, a wig and other accessories.

Mattel is calling this the world’s first gender-neutral doll, as you can create whatever character you’d like with the base body, be it male or female (and everything in-between). From a Time article discussing this doll line,

“Mattel tested the doll with 250 families across seven states, including 15 children who identify as trans, gender-nonbinary or gender-fluid and rarely see themselves reflected in the media, let alone their playthings. “There were a couple of gender-creative kids who told us that they dreaded Christmas Day because they knew whatever they got under the Christmas tree, it wasn’t made for them,” says Monica Dreger, head of consumer insights at Mattel. “This is the first doll that you can find under the tree and see is for them because it can be for anyone.” “

The face molds and face paint were designed specifically with this is mind. From the Time article, “the dolls faces betray no obvious gender: the lips are not too full, the eyelashes not too long and fluttery, the jaw not too wide.” There’s also a variety of skin tones and hair styles.

You can find Creatable World dolls at Amazon, Walmart and Target, among other stores! What do you think of Mattel’s newest line? Let us know in the comment area!
