Karan Johar’s Student of the Year brings Siddharth, Varun and Alia in the limelight

Karan Johar has always given the audiences a load to look forward to and has done the same with his most recent release, Student of the Year. The Film hit cinema screens on the 19th of October, 2012, and brought to the big-screen four promising new actors. While the film stars newcomers Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt in the lead, actor Boman Irani’s son Kayoze features in a supporting role. All of these young actors have managed to grab hearts with their exceptionally brilliant performances in the film. Previously, Karan went on to articulate, “More excited than nervous. This is the first time I’m working with newcomers. I hope all three of them Siddharth, Varun and Alia turn out well. I feel they’ve got humongous talent. But that could just be a proud parent’s opinion. Next summer I hope the audience discovers them to be as talented as I did”.

"Working with stars thrills me. This challenges me. After the experimental ‘My Name Is Khan’, making a masala film with newcomers poses a challenge of its own", said Karan before the release of the film. The movie was a trend-breaker for Karan Johar who has previously always roped in Bollywood bigwigs for roles in his high-budget directorial ventures. Also, the film is the first directed by him without his close friend Shah Rukh Khan in the lead. Instead, Karan decided to step away from the usual and star three newcomers in the lead; a move most directors wouldn’t risk taking.

In the film, Siddharth, Varun and Alia play the roles of three students at a prestigious school in Dehradun. Together, they face the highs and lows of campus romances and teenage life. The film also stars Sana Saeed who played Anjali in Karan Johar’s first film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and veteran actor Rishi Kapoor playing Dean Yogendra Vasisht, a gay and highly eccentric individual who presides over the school.
