Food Review: Satisfying dining experience at Portico Host restaurant at Alexandra

It is hard to imagine Portico Host (previously known as Hosted on the Patio) is nestled among the commercial buildings. Stepping into the Portico Host, you will be welcomed by its own garden and sprawling alfresco space when friends enjoyed chilling out over drinks.

The main dining hall is of a homely setting where families and friends find it a cozy place to dine in.

We were invited to try out new dishes that are launching by End Feb, and since it is still Lunar New Year Period, we also get to try their Hamachi Yu Sheng @ Host which includes some unconventional ingredients such as crispy Lotus Root and Wanton Skin, shredded Beetroot and even apple vinaigrette as the sauce. Hamachi fish, also known as the Japanese yellow tail fish is also used in place of the usual salmon for the fish slices.
Starters include Trio of Skin which includes deep fried eel skin and pork floss, chicken skin with host seasoning and the pork skin crackling. This serves as great snacks and goes well with the beer too! My person favourite is definitely the fried chicken skin that is crispy and flavourful; I just can't help myself taking one piece after another!

For the chilli crab lovers, the Duo Crab may serve as delighting dish with elements of surprise. Baby crabs fried till crispy, you can eat it alone or with the edible soil which is actually of salted egg. Dip your fried mantou into the chili mud crab meat dip but I believe if the spicy level were to raise a little, it will be even more shiok!

When it comes to dishes like Hotatte Tattaki, the freshness of the hottate (scallop) is all it takes. The fresh scallops pan seared to golden brown and topped up with mentaiko, apple slaw, avrugu caviar and cripsy kawa ebi is a different take from the usual salted pan seared scallop.

As I don't really fancy eating octopus, the Grilled Octoupus is certainly not the dish for me except for its beautiful plating, and... the Sous-vide potatoes chucks!

I was never a fan of Chicken Breast, but surprisingly, the Seared Chicken Breast is my second favourite among the main courses! It was soft and tender and it manages to retain the moisture and tasted juicy! The is the dish that I will definitely recommend to the health conscious eaters, something healthy yet taste is not compromised.

The Snapper Pie is definitely the top favourite among all. Fish in a pie is something unique. I love this dish, reason being simple, the snapper fillet is very fresh and the combination with wild mushroom ragout, asparagus, tomato and a hint of truffle oil is amazing!

The beef lovers should definitely go for the 72 Hour Braised Angus Beef Cheek. Having braised for 72 hours, the beef cheek is tender and delectable. There is certainly no complains of this dish even for me who hardly eat beef.

The BBQ Pork rib goes with a tangy BBQ sauce, tenderly grilled, you can easily cut them into pieces. The portion is huge, it will be recommended to share if you are the small eater.

The Duck Leg Confit, sits on top of potato mash, purple cabbage stew, red pepper coulis, and drizzle with Port wine sauce is also another delightful dish. Love its crispy duck skin.

A meal is never complete without desserts. We ended the meal with Pineapple dessert, Kaya Cream Brulee and Tiramisu.

This all pineapple dessert consisting of pineapple & rubbed crumber, dehydrated pineapple and pineapple sherbet is not to my liking, however, no deny the beautiful presentation that reminds you of a garden.

The Tiramisu here will never go wrong. The flower pot of Tiramisu sits on the bed of edible soil, which is an actually mashed Oreo cookie.
Love Cream Brulee? Then you should give the Kaya Cream Brulee a try. Very much of a local flavour that is filled with the kaya aroma. On a side note, it is slightly on the sweet side, so this may not be the dessert for you if you do not like the sweet stuff.

The overall dining experiences at the Portico Host restaurant was great, I loved its cozy setting and ambience and enjoyed majority of the dishes. The dishes that I will highly recommend will be the Duo Crab, Hotatte Tattaki, Seared Chicken Breast, Snapper Pie and the Kaya Cream Brulee.
