Andaz Apna Apna, Agneepath, Lakshya, Guide — 10 Bollywood Movies You'd Be Shocked To Know Were FLOPS Upon Release

While box-office success is the standard yardstick to measure the success of a Film, cinema lovers define the quality of a film by its recall value. In that respect, we have a number of films that appeal to audiences till date. Let us take a look at Bollywood classics that did not create ripples at the box office...

Andaz Apna Apna

Andaz Apna Apna is an evergreen film in Bollywood history. Over the years, it has acquired cult status. Whether it is Crime Master Gogo or the zany dialogues, it has a separate fan base for everything. But it wasn't a superhit when it released in 1994. It earned little more Rs 8 crore. Andaz Apna Apna faced immense competition from the likes of Mohra, Krantiveer, Laadla and so on. Aamir Khan and Salman Khan's jodi was bang on.

Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar

Every film-loving kid who has grown up in the 90s has perhaps watched Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. Pehla Nasha still remains the ultimate love anthem for them (there cannot be replacement ever!) and every underdog resembles a student from Modern College. But when Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar released it did well only in Mumbai and a couple of metro cities. It flopped in the interiors of the country.

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro

Late Kundan Shah's Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro didn't do well at the box-office when it released in 1983 but it is regarded as a cult classic much like Andaz Apna Apna. The film is a satire on corruption and justice. Ravi Baswani won the Best Comedian award. The Mahabharat scene is simply epic.

Shaan

After the success of Sholay, Ramesh Sippy took inspiration from the James Bond movies to make a stylish action thriller. Shaan took three years in the making. The film made some money in Mumbai, but failed elsewhere. Later, the collections picked up and it was declared as a hit. Fans will remember Kulbhushan Kharbanda as Shakaal forever.

Guide

One of the most celebrated films of Bollywood in India and the western media, Guide did not manage to recover its production cost. Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman will be etched forever in our minds as Raju and Rosie in this adaptation of RK Narayan's story. Plus, it has the brilliance of SD Burman's music and Fali Mistry's camera work.

Agneepath (1990)

Yash Johar invested a lot of money in this high-budget film made by Mukul Anand. Amitabh Bachchan won the National Award for his performance as Vijay Dinanath Chauhan. Even Mithun Chakraborty and Rohini Hattangadi won the National Awards. The movie did not recover its costs though it wasn't an outright flop. The 2012 remake made a lot of moolah.

The Burning Train

Ravi Chopra directed this action thriller film made by BR Chopra with an ensemble cast. The movie could be described as India's first disaster film. It was a flop at the box office.

Umrao Jaan (1981)

Rekha's performance in Umrao Jaan is one of the best in the history books of Bollywood. Muzaffar Ali's painstakingly directed film had the music, authenticity and heart but it did not rake in the money. But people still love to watch it to see cinema as an art form.

Tamasha

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone's film about searching oneself was not a hit at the box-office. However, critics loved the message.

Lakshya

Many people feel that Hrithik Roshan delivered his best in Lakshya. In the film, he plays an aimless young man who finds a goal after joining the Indian Military Academy. After the success of Dil Chahta Hai, Lakshya was considered as bit of a dud, but it has got cult status now.
