Gunjan Saxena The Kargil Girl: Has Gunjan Saxena's Colleague, Namrita Chandi, Contradicted Her Earlier Statements About Sexism In The IAF?

Ever since Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl has released, the film is getting mixed reviews. A lot of people have loved the writing and performances in the film, but what is making headlines is the objection by some on the undue negative portrayal of male officers in the Indian Air Force. Retired Wing Commander, Namrita Chandi in a scathing open letter had slammed Gunjan Saxena and the makers for peddling lies. In a piece in Outlook Magazine, she wrote, "I have myself served as a helicopter pilot and I have never faced the kind of abuse and maltreatment as was portrayed in the movie. In fact, men in uniform are true gentlemen and professionals. They go out of their way to make lady officers comfortable and adjust. Yes, initially there were teething troubles like no changing rooms or exclusive ladies toilets; yet the men made space for us. Sometimes, my brother officers stood guard outside the curtain while I changed. Never in my entire career span of 15 years have I been disrespected or mistreated."

Well, this is in sharp contrast to what she said in an interview to bestselling author, Somdutta Sarkar. The writer had done the 'Intensify Humanity' podcast with Namrita Chandi. In the interview she had spoken about the sexist jokes that were quite rampant. She said in the interview that she was being judged and watched closely every minute. Chandi says her competence was judged every time. The lady also spoke about having to share male changing rooms and toilets for quite a few years. The lady said there were sexist jokes and double-meaning conversations, and she had to play along to fit in as a team member. Here is the video...

Chandi further wrote in the letter, "The entire narrative is skewed and as far from the truth as chalk and cheese. If this film attempted at infusing patriotism in the country's women, and I was a young woman, I would run as far away from the Indian Air Force as possible! The film shows misogyny at its worst!" Well, we feel this is not the end of the matter! Janhvi Kapoor plays the main role in Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl. Pankaj Tripathi, Vineet Kumar Singh and Angad Bedi also have important roles.
