Irrfan Khan’s Blackmail collected a decent amount on it’s opening day. The dark comedy was always expected to have a niche audience but the number of screens allotted to the movie (1500), made us hope that it will open up to good if not great numbers. The movie that made headlines after Irrfan’s ill health and his absence from the promotions also stars Kirti Kulhari and Arunoday Singh. Irrfan who’s currently riding high on the huge success of his last year’s release Hindi Medium in China hopes to taste the same success with his recent release Blackmail. The movie received mix reviews from the critics with many applauding its story and others recognizing it as an insult to the audiences’ intelligence. Trade analyst, Taran Adarsh took to his Twitter account to reveal the first-day Box Office numbers of the dark comedy which were decent enough. The film collected Rs 2.81 crore on its opening day which is exactly same as Irrfan’s last year release, Hindi Medium. The movie that also starred Pakistani actress, Saba Qamar, opened exactly with the same number but later enjoyed a great run at the box office. However, Blackmail managed to beat the actor’s last release, Qarib Qarib Singlle at the box office with a margin of over a crore. With Blackmail enjoying a good word of mouth, let’s wait to see if it manages to beat Hindi Medium’s lifetime collection. The movie is a roller coaster ride where you don’t know what will happen next writes our reviewer, Ankita Chaurasia. She says, ” The story of the film is the winner, hands down, and in a film that stars The Irrfan Khan, this is saying a lot. The film, much like the game, Pac Man, that Dev keeps playing, is all about who devours who, before getting themselves killed. It is a dark, dark comedy that is as good as dark chocolate. There’s humour in the mundane and you only realise that when it is pointed out to you. Which this film does in good measure. It is such a delight to watch a film that doesn’t rely solely on the performance of its lead cast to shine.
