The Kwara state House of Assembly has passed a bill for a law that expands areas where the manufacturing, sales and consumption of alcohol are prohibited in the capital, Ilorin.

The directive came after the consideration of the report on the bill by the House on Wednesday, February 21.

Premium Times reported that under the law, no person will be allowed to produce, sell, store or openly consume alcohol within specified locations within the capital.

The bill spells out that offenders will be liable of paying a fine of not less than N100,000 or serving a jail term of six months.

In his speech after the passage of the bill into law, the speaker, Ali Ahmad, directed the clerk of the House, Ahmed Mohammed, to forward a copy of the bill to the governor for his assent.

Ahmad said: “The Bill would go a long way to protect our young ones from the ills of alcohol consumption.”

The speaker explained that with the passage of the bill, the sales of alcohol was now controlled as obtainable in advanced nations across the world.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com reported that the Kwara state caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC), named caucus for progressive change, had offered to provide a quick exit for Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed to leave the party.

The party came to its conclusion after the governor was quoted to have said he and his political family will dump the APC if their supporters ask them to do so.
