Company Results

  • Foyles have reported a 2.7% increase in sales to £25.0m for the year to 30 June 2016. (Source: Retail Week)
  • Kingfisher have reported a 1.7% increase in total sales (constant currency) to £11.2bn for the year to 31 January 2017. Retail profit increased by 6.1% to £847.0m, while pre tax profit stood at £787.0m for the same period.
  • Next have reported a 0.3% decrease in total group sales to £4.1bn for the 52 weeks to January 2017. Next Retail sales decreased by 2.9% to £2.3bn while Next Directory sales increased by 4.2% to £1.7bn for the same period. Underlying profit before tax stood at £790.2m for the same period.

  • Seasalt, a women clothing and apparel retailer, have reported 20.0% increase in total sales to £41.0m for the year to 31 January 2017. Like-for-like sales increased by 6.0% for the same period. (Source: Retail Week)
  • ScS have reported a 14.6% increase in total revenue to £157.9m for the 26 weeks to 28 January 2017. Gross sales increased by 14.1% to £165.9m for the same period.
  • Ted Baker have reported a 16.4% increase in group revenue to £531.0m for the 52 weeks to 28 January 2017. UK and Europe retail sales increased by 10.7% to £279.5m while E-commerce sales increased by 35.1% to £72.3m. Group profit before tax stood at £61.3m for the same period.

Lifestyle LFLs performed well this week, up by +3.16% off of an already positive base of +1.2% for the same week last year. The performance is particularly strong given that the same week last year was leading up to Easter. The warmer spring weather aided sales of outdoor goods this week, while gift retailers and stationers generally had a positive week, benefiting from Increased footfall.

Fashion LFLs were up by +1.19% this week off of a base of -0.7% for the same week last year when pre-Easter sales were disappointing. The positive performance for fashion this week was driven by warmer spring weather and increased footfall, with some evidence of pre-Mother’s Day discounting.

Homeware was the star performer this week, with LFLs up by +3.25% off of an already positive base of +2.3% last year. While only 50% of respondents reported positive LFLs, strong performances by some soft furnishings and furniture retailers boosted the overall result, while department stores were polarised this week.

Non-store LFLs were up by +18.85% this week off of a strong base of +24.3% for the same week last year when Easter was pending. Despite being below the +20% threshold, 58% of fashion retailers reported positive non-store sales, as compared to 85% for lifestyle and 83% for homeware.

Clothing, Footwear & Accessories

  • Ben Sherman, the clothing retailer, have announced plans to open their first standalone 164 sq.m store in Birmingham at the city’s Bullring shopping centre in April 2017. (Source: Retail Bulletin)
  • Brantano, the shoe retailer, have announced plans to enter into administration, putting more than 1,000 jobs at risk. The retailer has 73 outlets and 64 concessions in the UK and employs 1,086 staff, including 71 at the head office in Leicestershire (Source: BBC)
  • Canada Goose, the high-end winter clothing retailer, have announced plans to launch their first UK store on London’s Regent Street. (Source: Retail Week)
  • Love Stories, the lingerie and swimwear brand, have announced plans to open their first store in the UK in Shoreditch. (Source: Retail week)

  • Pandora have opened their new factory in Northern Thailand. The facility in Lamphun near Chiang Mai is the first in a series planned initiatives by Pandora to meet increasing demand. (Source: Retail Bulletin)
  • Ted Baker have announced plans to launch a golf-inspired menswear range. The new range will be available online and in specialist golf retailers, combining technical fabrics with fashionable styling. (Source: Retail Week)

  • The White Company have announced plans to launch in the US with opening of their first store in New York opening this summer. There are plans to open more stores in malls across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. (Source: Retail Week)

Electrical & Entertainment

  • Clintons, the card specialist, have opened two standalone Party Delights stores, one in Manchester and another in Romford. The venture, in partnership with American wholesale party goods firm Amscan, aims to position Clintons as an expert in the party market. (Source: Retail Week)
  • Lego, the toy maker, have announced the appointment of Marina Edwards as their new Vice President and General Manager for UK and Ireland, with immediate effect. (Source: Retail Week)

Food & Drink

  • Aldi have announced plans to open 19,500 sq.ft store in the new Northern Quarter development at Telford Shopping Centre. (Source: Retail Week)
  • Sainsbury have announced closure of Phone Shops from their supermarkets following a review of their in-store services, putting 160 jobs at risk. The grocer is closing all 38 of its Phone Shops, 16 of which will be sold to mobile phone operator EE. (Source: Retail week)
  • Molson Coors has lined up a 33cl can format in the UK for Thai brand Singha Beer, as it looks to surf the wave of popularity for the size that has been created by the craft beer segment. (Source: Just Drinks)
  • Diageo has added a coconut-flavoured shot variant to its Captain Morgan portfolio, as it looks to capitalise on the popularity of coconut. (Source: Tipsy Diaries)

  • Tesco have announced a restructuring of their leadership team as Trevor Masters, Chief Executive officer of Tesco International, steps down from the business at the end of May 2017. His role will be split into two and he will be replaced by Tony Hoggett and Matt Simister, who will head Tesco’s Asia and Central Europe divisions respectively. (Source: Financial Times)
  • Waitrose have announced plans to limit their popular free tea and coffee scheme. After a trial in eight of its stores, the supermarket is implementing the change across all shops. From 3rd April 2017, Waitrose customers throughout the country will have to make a purchase before collecting their coffee cup at the check-out. (Source: the Telegraph)

The BRC/Springboard Footfall and Vacancies Monitor have revealed that footfall in February 2017 decreased by 1.0% as compared to February 2016. This is lower than the three-month average of 0.8%, but slightly above the twelve-month average of 1.1% decrease. High street footfall increased by 0.1% in February 2017 compared to 2.9% decrease in February 2016. Footfall in shopping centers decreased by 2.6% in February 2017 as compared to 0.6% decrease in February 2016.

The latest figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index have revealed that online retail sales increased by 15.0% y-o-y in February 2017, building on solid growth of 16.0% witnessed in February 2016.

Household

  • Kingfisher have announced the appointment of Andy Cosslett as their new Non-Executive Director and Chairman-Designate with effect from 1st April 2017. He will replace Daniel Bernard, the current Chairman as he is set to retire and step down from the company’s board. (Source: Retail Bulletin)
  • Models Own, beauty retailer, have announced the opening of their first UK flagship outside of London in Leeds Trinity shopping centre. (Source: Retail week)

  • The Original Factory Shop have announced the appointment of Alistair McGeorge as their new Chief Executive Office on an interim basis with immediate effect as Tony Page has stepped down from his role. (Source: Drapers)
  • The Range have unveiled plans for new purpose-built headquarters in their home town, Plymouth. The move will result in the creation of 570 jobs across a number of departments. (Source: Retail Week)
