Showing Grace in the Face of Defeat

Hillary Clinton supporters like myself are still reeling and recovering from her loss in the Presidential election.

It’s not only that she would have broken that very hard glass ceiling for women, but she is no doubt one of the most qualified Presidential candidates in history — advocating for children and families, serving the people of New York for eight years as their Senator, and four years as our country’s Secretary of State.

I wonder how many women, or men, could be so gracious in experiencing such a devastating Defeat. I believe she showed the person she truly is in her remarkable concession speech — urging her supporters and country to get behind our new President-elect, Donald Trump.

Because in the end, she understands that our country represents stability, goodness and a beacon of democracy in a world in turmoil. It’s possibly a role we don’t always want to assume, but when the chips are down other countries turn to us to invest their money in our stable economy, and look to our leadership in addressing some of the planet’s most pressing problems.

Her concession speech made me proud to be an American. She gave me the courage to put the election behind me and continue to work for a better country and better world.

Thank you, Hillary, for the great lesson of how to express grace in the face of defeat and for your service to our country.
