“Vedy Skedy”

Many of you already know that we lost comic actor Joe Flaherty on April 1, 2024 at the age of 82. Flaherty was a prolific actor with a long career, but the role that most endeared him to me was that of  Count Floyd, vampire host of Monster Chiller Horror Theatre, a parody of horror movie shows on the Canadian sketch comedy television show SCTV (Second City Television). I was completely obsessed with SCTV during my college years and Count Floyd was among its most memorable characters.  Now you can remember Joe Flaherty’s life and career with this fabulous T Shirt featuring Flaherty’s portrayal of Count Floyd — complete with 3D glasses!

For anyone unfamiliar with the bit, Count Floyd was a comically inept horror show host who would introduce low-budget horror films with exaggerated enthusiasm and attempts to scare the audience. Despite his efforts, the movies he presented (such as 3D House of Pancakes) were hilariously inept and not even remotely scary. Flaherty’s portrayal of Count Floyd was characterized by his exaggerated Transylvanian accent, over-the-top mannerisms, and frequent breaking of character.

The skit was known for its ridiculous absurdity, with Flaherty delivering memorable lines such as “Ooh, scary stuff, boys and girls!”,  “Very scary! (prounounced “Vedy skedy”) and “Don’t worry, it’s a good one!” before introducing the supposed horror film of the night.

Monster Chiller Horror Theatre became one of the most popular recurring segments on SCTV and to helped solidify its reputation as a groundbreaking comedy series. Joe Flaherty’s role as Count Floyd  remains a beloved part of its legacy.
